Manchester United star ‘to play a new role next season’, Rúben Amorim thinks he is “unique”

Rúben Amorim is reportedly set to hand one of his current Manchester United players a new role next season as he thinks the player is “unique.”

While Manchester United are currently focusing on the 2025 summer transfer window, Rúben Amorim will also have one eye on where his current crop of players will fit into his squad for 2025/26.

Some players, such as Alejandro Garnacho, Antony, and Marcus Rashford, have already been deemed surplus to requirements. Still, many others are set to be handed a fresh slate ahead of next season.

United have already confirmed the arrival of Matheus Cunha and are hoping to secure Bryan Mbeumo in the coming weeks, with Amorim keen to add Premier League experience to his squad.

The club want to sign a new midfielder and striker before pre-season commences next month, while a new defender and goalkeeper are not out of the question, depending on sales.

Mount set for new role under Amorim next season

Mason Mount is a player who divides the Old Trafford faithful. While he is a talented player, his injury issues across his two seasons at the club have prevented him from having a clear impact, with some feeling that United should cut their losses.

After joining United from Chelsea in a £50 million deal in 2023, Mount has made just 46 appearances for the club, scoring four goals and providing one assist. However, two of these came in a fantastic 30-minute cameo against Athletic Club in the Europa League semi-finals last season.

Amorim is known to be a big fan of Mount, calling him a “proper footballer” last season, and according to TeamTalk, is set to hand the English midfielder another chance at United ahead of next season.

According to TeamTalk, Amorim sees Mount as a “unique” profile who can play both as an attacking midfielder and as one of the two deeper players, operating in a No. 8 role.

Can Mount succeed with Cunha and Mbeumo

Mount himself is said to be very keen on continuing at United under Amorim, with the head coach seeing the player’s work rate, technical ability, and versatility as key traits that fit perfectly into the squad he wants to build at United.

Further, TeamTalk reports that, despite the arrival of Cunha and the potential signing of Mbeumo, Amorim still feels Mount has a significant role to play at the club next season.

Mount himself is said to have expressed enthusiasm about the tactical changes Amorim is looking to employ from next season onward.

While United’s attacking line looked sparse last season, injury returns as well as potential arrivals can give Amorim a significant number of new options for the 2025/26 campaign.

While Cunha and Mbeumo would become the new forces of the attack, they will be joined by Mount, Kobbie Mainoo, Joshua Zirkzee, Amad, and Chido Obi as options. Rasmus Højlund’s future remains undecided.
