Following a recent injury blow out on loan, Manchester United have called back one of their young academy graduates to assess the damage, following a challenging Championship move.
After earning himself a loan move away to West Bromwich Albion in the summer, United academy midfielder Toby Collyer appears to have suffered a major injury in recent weeks.
This injury has reportedly led to him promptly returning to Carrington for tests from the club to help further determine the severity of the injury.
After racking up 13 appearances for the Reds during his breakout season as a 20-year-old academy graduate, Collyer has shown promise that he could have a significant future at United.
With regular playing time and opportunities to develop at United currently being difficult to come by, with there only being two midfield positions in Amorim’s system, and facing heavy competition, Collyer departed for West Brom last summer with the hope of further developing his game and gaining more valuable experience that could hopefully help shape a future for him at Old Trafford.
However, it hasn’t been all smooth sailing for Collyer during his time so far at the Hawthorns.
Collyer’s injury issues
Since joining West Brom on a season-long loan in the summer, Collyer has yet to really make his mark in the 1st 11, only recording 3 starts in the 12 matches he has played in.
However, this is not necessarily all the fault of the young midfielder, with him facing other troubles with injury, as well as the most recent one he has unfortunately picked up, having picked up a muscle injury earlier on in October, which had also kept him out for 4 games.
These previous struggles with injury have once again resurfaced in recent weeks, when Collyer was forced to leave the pitch after only 11 minutes in West Brom’s 1-1 draw at home to Birmingham City.
Following the Englishman’s injury setback against the Blues, which has seen him return to Carrington for medical assessment, West Brom manager Ryan Mason has since spoken on Collyer’s struggles.
Ryan Mason quotes on Collyer
There have been a number of recent quotes from Mason regarding Collyer’s situation covered in the Manchester Evening News from when he had been speaking with Express & Star on Thursday, where he can be quoted as saying:
“It’s quite a big injury. He’s at United at the minute. They’re just assessing him, and then I think in the coming weeks we’ll just decide his plan regarding his rehab.”
Mason was then asked how Collyer’s injury may affect the remaining duration of his loan move, to which he responded by saying:
“We’ve got him on loan for the season. That’s the plan. Normally, any loan player who gets an injury that’s a bit more than a small one, more of a significant one, I think it’s right for the parent club to look at them to check them over.

“We’re in dialogue and hopefully he can do his rehab and come back better. We’re looking into it, both clubs. He’s disappointed, naturally. When you’re trying to build your career when you have setbacks that hold you back, it’s challenging. But I guess the reality is to get to the top in any industry there’s going to be challenges. I think if he’s clever, if he uses it wisely, then for sure it can make him stronger in many different aspects.”
