After scoring the winning goal in Manchester United’s 2-1 win over Liverpool, Harry Maguire dropped a hint about his future at the club, with his contract set to expire at the end of the season.
Manchester United earned a hard-fought 2–1 victory over Liverpool on Sunday afternoon, as Rúben Amorim’s side claimed a crucial three points at Anfield.
United made a flying start, taking the lead inside two minutes when Bryan Mbeumo finished smartly from a tight angle after being played through by Amad. The visitors continued to threaten, and Bruno Fernandes came close to doubling the advantage but could not make the most of a clear opportunity.
Amorim’s side held a narrow lead at the break, although Liverpool began the second half with greater intent. Cody Gakpo struck the post soon after the restart, putting United under pressure for the first time. Just after the hour mark, Amorim made three changes, bringing on Manuel Ugarte, Patrick Chinazaekpere Dorgu, and Benjamin Šeško to add energy and control.
Liverpool’s persistence was rewarded late on when Gakpo equalised from close range with just over ten minutes remaining. However, United responded almost immediately, as Harry Maguire rose highest to head home and restore the lead.
Arne Slot’s men pressed hard in the closing moments, but United’s defence stood strong to secure their first win at Anfield since January 2016.
Harry Maguire hints at his Man Utd future
As he’s done a number of times before, Maguire came to his side’s rescue late on once again, latching onto a fantastic Fernandes cross to score in the 84th minute.
As reported by The Manchester Evening News, speaking after the game, Maguire reflected on how much it means to finally win at Anfield, while also dropping a hint about his future at the club.
“I’ve been here seven years now, so it’s been tough for the seven years not getting that win,” he said.
“It’s been on my mind a little bit, to be honest. I’m in my last year now, so this could be the last time I played at Anfield for this club, so it’s really important that I’ve come here and tick that one off because it has been playing on my mind.
“We know how important the game is for our fans. Last year, we performed really well, and I had a chance to maybe win it, so it was a big, important win for myself, for each player, for the staff, for Ruben. But more importantly, a big win for our fans because it’s been tough for them.
Maguire speaks on a necessary mentality change
He further touched on what the reaction will be to United’s win over Liverpool, and emphasised that this can’t be a one-off performance, and they have to build on the back of such a result.

“This club will probably get a few plaudits this week. Resilience, fighting spirit, we could have played better, we know that, we could have played better with the ball, but if we don’t perform next weekend against Brighton, it will be exactly the same the following week.
“We need to build on it. We need to build momentum. We need to build positive performances. Performances breed results in the end, and that’s the most important thing. Take the positives, take the confidence, but we’ve got to make sure against Brighton at Old Trafford we perform and get the win.”
Maguire himself could have a part to play in the attempt to shift the mentality of the United players, having been praised by Amorim for his mentality and influence within the dressing room, and his experience could be very beneficial to the team.
