Manchester United star receives subtle dig from Ruben Amorim after Benjamin Šeško transfer

Ruben Amorim gives damning verdict on Manchester United star after his side’s 1-1 draw against Fiorentina in their final pre-season game at Old Trafford

Manchester United brought their pre-season to a close, playing out a 1-1 draw against Fiorentina before beating them on penalties with the Snapdragon Cup trophy on the line.

Ruben Amorim’s side started off the game slow, conceding in the 8th minute from a corner after Simon Sohm was left free in the box, giving his side an early lead.

That goal seemed to kick United into gear, and after displaying some impressive attacking play, a brilliant corner delivery from Bruno Fernandes forced Robin Gosens to turn the ball into his own net on the 25 minute mark.

The second half was much better from United, with good chances falling to the likes of Mason Mount, Matheus Cunha and Amad, but none were able to break the deadlock before the full-time whistle was blown.

Amorim’s damning verdict of Hojlund

While during the Premier League Summer Series, Amorim would make a host of changes in the game, mostly at half-time, there were only five changes made in the game against Fiorentina, as United gear up for their league opener against Arsenal next Sunday.

One player who wasn’t given any minutes was Rasmus Højlund, whose future at the club is looking more uncertain as the transfer window goes on.

Speaking after the game, Amorim touched on last season’s poor performances in the attack, saying: “At times we struggled without the reference as a striker… we have a new striker now.”

Despite insisting on staying at the club and fighting for his place, there is seemingly no place for Højlund in Amorim’s plans going forwards, so he may be forced to look for a move, with many Serie A clubs interested in the Danish international.

Amorim on what Šeško will bring to his side

Benjamin Šeško was officially unveiled in front of the Old Trafford faithful alongside the other three additions in Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, and Diego León to rapturous applause, as Amorim continues his transformation of the club.

After the game, Amorim spoke on the quality that the 22-year-old Slovenian will bring to the side, saying: “He has the characteristics that we needed, and is a player that, with all the information that we have, we need to stop the guy from working. It’s not the opposite. So that is also important.

“He’s really young. He’s good in the air. He’s good running the channels. He’s good on the ball. So I think he has great potential. I think he can improve a lot. And for sure he’s going to feel at home in our club. He’s the right character to be in this group. So we are really, really happy to have him.”

On coming into a good environment: “That’s that is important and is going to notice since the first day the first training that is in the right in the right place Is going to the new building that is also important so things are getting better But in the end we need to win games.”
