Manchester United star must “knock on Ruben Amorim’s door” and ask two serious questions
Rasmus Højlund has struggled in the Manchester United team this season and Ruben Amorim left him on the bench last time out.
Manchester United have struggled for goals this season, with just 28 goals scored in 24 Premier League games so far.
The strikers at Old Trafford are both in poor form, with Rasmus Højlund’s last goal coming at the beginning of December against Viktoria Plzen.
He has played 13 games since then and failed to score in all of those games. Meanwhile, Joshua Zirkzee is goalless in his last 11 appearances.
Ruben Amorim decided against starting either of the strikers last time out against Crystal Palace and played Kobbie Mainoo as a false-nine in the 2-0 defeat.
McCoist says Højlund should knock on Amorim’s door
Ex-Scottish striker Ally McCoist believes that would have been a “slap in the face” for Højlund, despite the Dane’s form.
McCoist suggested that the 22-year-old striker would be knocking on Amorim’s door at Carrington afterwards and asking some important questions.
“Well, you tell me, I’ve got no idea, but whatever way you look at it, that’s a major slap in the face for Højlund,” he told TribalFootball.
“To a lesser degree Zirkzee as well, but he’s not an out-and-out centre-forward.
“Højlund is and if you’re Rasmus Højlund, you’ll be knocking on the door Monday morning asking, ‘What’s going on? You’re playing somebody who’s not a centre-forward in my position. Are you trying to tell me something?’
“Playing Mainoo there certainly didn’t work that’s for sure.”
Højlund has been given enough chances under Amorim
Perhaps it would be a valid point if Højlund hadn’t been given enough chances under Amorim – but he has.
Since the head coach’s arrival, Højlund has started 12 out of 19 fixtures which is more than enough to make an impression.
He is in no possession to complain if the manager decides to bench him and if a player who isn’t even a natural centre-forward is starting ahead of him – he should be asking himself questions, rather than Amorim.
There are certainly some valid excuses for Højlund’s form, but he also has to take responsibility as a Manchester United player.
