One Manchester United star has explained why he has ‘zero regrets’ over his move to Old Trafford despite there being issues surrounding his game-time.
Manchester United have had a mixed campaign in the Premier League so far this season. They currently sit in 10th place but are just three points away from the top four.
The Reds are expected to challenge for those European places this term, especially as they have the advantage of not playing midweek football.
But that has also led to issues emerging over game-time for several players who are unable to push for significant minutes under Ruben Amorim.
There is one player, however, who has barely played since he made the move to Old Trafford in 2021 but he has ‘no regrets’ over the decision.
United star explains why he has ‘zero regrets’ over move
Tom Heaton rejoined United in the summer of 2021 alongside big names like Cristiano Ronaldo and Raphaël Varane.
The veteran goalkeeper has been the third-choice ‘keeper since returning and that has meant that he has rarely touched the pitch.
Heaton has three competitive appearances for United but that has not impacted how he feels about the transfer.
“I love it,” Heaton said when asked if he still enjoys football and his current role at United, in an exclusive interview with The Guardian.
“The feeling doesn’t leave you,” he added. “I’m still trying to get that shirt, so in that sense game days can be difficult sat up in the stands, doing the warm-ups with the lads and then getting changed again to play that supporting role.”
“My outlook can sometimes be bordering on deluded. I understand the optics of it, but I thought: ‘I’m going to take that on.’ The logical side of my brain knew that coming back here at 35 was probably more to fill this role. But I have zero regrets. I’ve loved being here.”
Heaton’s experience helps behind-the-scenes
Many fans actually called for Heaton to be involved when André Onana and Altay Bayındır were strugglig between the sticks.
It is less-so now that Senne Lammens has entered the club but Heaton can still offer support and guidance to the 23-year-old.
Having an extra experienced head in the dressing room is never a bad thing, especially when there are plenty of youngsters around.
It would not be surprising to see Heaton move into a coaching role at Old Trafford when he decides to hang up his boots, and it would be nice to see him in a game at least once more before that moment.
