Harry Maguire has opened up on Manchester United’s first win at Anfield since January 2016 in a post-match interview.
Manchester United ended their nearly decade long winless streak at Anfield today with a 1-2 win against their arch rivals Liverpool.
Bryan Mbeumo got United off to a flying start by finding the back of the net less than two minutes into the game.
As the game went on, particularly in the second-half, Liverpool started to build more and more momentum and eventually found an equaliser through Cody Gakpo, who had hit the post two times prior to finally finding the back of the net.
Shortly after though, Harry Maguire restored United’s lead witha header in the 84th minute and sealed the three points for Ruben Amorim’s men.
Maguire opens up on what Liverpool victory means
Shortly after the final whistle at Anfield, Maguire opened up on how much the victory against United’s bitter rivals means.
“It means everything. They had the better of us over the last few years and it’s not been good for our club,” United No. 5 said.
“We have not given our fans enough days like today, so it has been a long time coming, coming to this ground and picking up three points.”
The last time Manchester United won at Anfield was in January 2016 under Louis van Gaal. Wayne Rooney scored the only goal of the game.
With Liverpool having lost their last three games prior to today, it felt like this was the best chance in a long time United have had to win at Anfield. Liverpool were extremely vulnerable, and United made them pay.
Maguire deserved that moment
Harry Maguire’s Manchester United career has been anything but a smooth ride.
The England international has enjoyed some excellent spells at the club, but has had some of the lowest lows as well.
For a while, it looked like his Manchester United career was more or less over. He lost his position as captain and was also close to joining West Ham in 2023, but that move eventually fell through.
He was the subject of immense criticism, which at times certainly crossed the line and could be classified as abuse.
Maguire, however, has always been a model professional and continued to work diligently throughout the entirety of his time at the club. He has once again become a crucial player for Manchester United.
In an era where players are quick to kick up a fuss when they don’t get their way, characters like Maguire are far and few in between. He is a role model for young players and a leader, even if he doesn’t wear the armband anymore.
He deserved that moment today.
