Manchester United staff ‘questioned’ André Onana after pre-season moment, Ruben Amorim was not impressed

André Onana is set to leave Manchester United and join Turkish side Trabzonspor on a season-long loan in the coming days.

Manchester United’s goalkeeping issues have been evident in recent years, and André Onana has struggled to find form since arriving from Inter Milan in 2023.

Once regarded as one of the best ball-playing goalkeepers, the 29-year-old has failed to reproduce that level of performance at Old Trafford.

Following the deadline day signing of Senne Lammens, reports suggested Onana and Altay Bayındır would both stay at the club to compete for a place under Ruben Amorim.

However, it has now been confirmed that Onana will instead move to Turkey on loan with Trabzonspor, where he is also set to receive a salary increase.

United staff ‘questioned’ Onana after pre-season moment

When United returned to pre-season in the summer, the one thing everyone seemed to notice was the physical condition of Ruben Amorim’s players.

It was reported that the United boss had his squad on strict programmes during the off season to ensure that they returned to action in top shape.

However, Onana suffered a hamstring injury within the first few days of pre-season which seemed strange. He missed the entire pre-season tour.

According to The Athletic, after Onana reported the issue to United staff, they were left questioning what shape he was in.

It was added that this setback let a lasting impression for Amorim, who selected Bayındır for United’s first three games of the Premier League season.

Onana asked for new United contract

Onana also reportedly returned to Carrington this summer asking for a new contract with improved terms. United players have seen their wages slashed 25 per cent after failing to qualify for European competition.

The goalkeeper’s stance on receiving a new contract did not go down well with Amorim. Onana has almost single-handedly kicked United out of Europe in both of his full seasons with the club.

United would have returned to the Champions League if they won the Europa League final against Tottenham Hotspur earlier this year. Onana was terrible in that game.

Amorim has regularly backed the goalkeeper despite his issues, but demands for a new contract and turning up to pre-season unfit seem like things that have changed his mind on Onana.
