Manchester United squad ‘losing faith’ in two “awful” stars, Rúben Amorim may have to make unthinkable choice

Manchester United’s current squad are reportedly losing faith in two of their current members, with Rúben Amorim facing a stunning choice.

Manchester United’s start to the new season has been turbulent, with Rúben Amorim still searching for his first win in charge.

More than £200 million was invested in four signings over the summer, headlined by Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, and Benjamin Šeško, but the campaign opened with a 1-0 defeat against Arsenal that set an early negative tone.

A sluggish 1-1 draw away at Fulham followed, before the setback deepened in the Carabao Cup, where United were dumped out on penalties by League Two side Grimsby Town after trailing 2-0 at half-time.

Having overseen a promising pre-season that raised optimism, Amorim suddenly finds himself under mounting pressure, with frustration growing inside the dressing room and patience across the club already beginning to fray.

United players losing faith in the goalkeepers

While United’s lack of creating and scoring still a major issue across the opening few ties, another alarming problem has been the goalkeepers.

Altay Bayındır’s two Premier League ties have seen the player play well with his feet, but look unassured and sub-par when dealing with crosses. Similarly, André Onana’s poor performance against Grimsby left little to be desired, too.

It has been widely reported in the media that United has an “awful” goalkeeping department at the club, with a major change needed. According to the Manchester Evening News, confidence in the pair is waning thin.

The MEN’s report states that United’s players view the recent loss to Grimsby as a ‘new low’, and that confidence in Bayındır and Onana is starting to wane.

Amorim may have unthinkable decision to make

A few weeks ago, when the idea was suggested to him, Amorim looked openly baffled when it was put to him that veteran goalkeeper Tom Heaton should be considered a starting option following Bayındır’s clear issues commanding his own area.

The head coach swatted away the suggestion, but just a few weeks later, it may start to become a genuine reality ahead of the Premier League tie against Burnley on Saturday afternoon.

While the club are thought to be continuing to try and wrap up a deal for Royal Antwerp goalkeeper Senne Lammens, Heaton could be considered for the goalkeeping position on Saturday afternoon – an unthinkable decision just a few weeks ago.

Granted, it is still an unlikely scenario with Amorim no doubt keen to try and keep the confidence of his two goalkeepers high, but with Onana’s performance against Grimsby a shockingly poor one, Bayındır may be reinstated to start his third Premier League tie in a row.
