Manchester United should consider unsuccessful Raphaël Varane contract move with Ruben Amorim’s “really important” star

Manchester United should consider a previous contract move they attempted with Raphaël Varane before a potential summer departure.

With the 2024/25 campaign nearing its end, Manchester United are preparing for a busy summer transfer window for Ruben Amorim.

Signings are expected to be made but several departures are also likely, with United bosses looking to improve the current squad at Amorim’s disposal.

United are also looking to improve their wage structure and that will be helped by the departures of Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford and Antony.

That is also why the club are reportedly looking to try and sell Casemiro in the summer, with the Brazilian currently on around £350,000-per-week at Old Trafford.

Casemiro can still be important for United

Casemiro joined United in the summer of 2022 from Real Madrid and was an immediate success in his first season at the club, scoring in the Carabao Cup final.

Things were extremely rocky during his second term at the club but this season has proven that the Brazilian can still be a very useful player for the team in the right environment.

“I think I’m also learning how to use players like Casemiro and, like you said, without a lot of options, we are trying to put our players in the best positions and that helps us a lot,” Amorim explained earlier this month after stating that he was “really important” for the team.

The experience of Casemiro, who has won five Champions League trophies, could still be very important for a young group at Old Trafford, and that is the argument for him to stay beyond the end of this season.

But the club simply cannot justify keeping a player on £350,000-per-week when they are not an absolute superstar, and that is why they’re looking to sell.

United should consider Varane contract move with Casemiro

United could look at implementing a move they attempted before Raphaël Varane departed the club last summer. It was a similar situation with the Frenchman, who was also on a large contract.

Those at Old Trafford wanted to keep Varane on a renewed contract which lowered his wages. Ultimately, an agreement could not be found and he departed at the end of his deal.

Before any serious movements occur in the summer, United should also look at making the same move with Casemiro, who can still be a valuable member of the squad.

Of course, the power does ultimately lay with Casemiro, who still has multiple years left on his current contract at Old Trafford and seems keen to stay.

That would, however, be a lot easier for the club to accept if he was not on the blockbuster wages he’s earning currently. Otherwise, they will be looking for other potential solutions.
