Manchester United will now definitely have an reunion with one of their ex-players this summer after he extended his contract at his new club.
After a terrible season, Manchester United are trying to improve the squad at Ruben Amorim’s disposal in several key areas.
They have been focusing on the attack, having already signed Matheus Cunha and moving forward with their efforts to bring in Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford.
However, many supporters believe that a change in goal is needed after being unimpressed by André Onana last season.
Onana joined the club in 2023 as a replacement for David de Gea, who initially took a year out of the game before moving to Italian side Fiorentina.
Some fans still believe it was a mistake to let De Gea leave the club. He is still described as an ‘elite’ player while there are major question marks over Onana.
United reunion with De Gea confirmed
When he arrived at Fiorentina last year, De Gea only signed a one-year deal but he managed to impress in his first season back at the top level.
The shot-stopper kept 11 clean sheets in 35 Serie A games as the Italian side finished sixth in the table and secured Europa Conference League football again.
Despite rumours with a move elsewhere, it has recently been confirmed that De Gea has signed a fresh three-year contract extension with the club.
A club statement read: “ACF Fiorentina is pleased to announce that David De Gea’s contract has been extended to June 30, 2028.
“The Spanish goalkeeper joined the club last summer, having previously played for Atletico Madrid and Manchester United. In his first season he made 42 appearances and kept 11 clean sheets.”
United responded to this news on their website to remind supporters that this confirms De Gea ‘is set for an emotional return to Old Trafford’ after the pre-season tour of the United States.
Amorim’s men have one friendly game at their home ground before kicking off their Premier League campaign and it is against Fiorentina.
De Gea deserves Old Trafford send off
It will certainly be nice for De Gea to get the send-off he deserved at Old Trafford when he returns to the stadium later this summer.
Fans had split opinions about his exit but everyone seemed to agree that the way United handled it was amateur and unfair on someone who had been at the club longer than a decade.
Seeing the likes of Jonny Evans, Victor Lindelöf and Christian Eriksen given a chance for a proper goodbye at the Theatre of Dreams is how it should be done.
Bruno Fernandes will be looking forward to seeing his ex-teammate after it was revealed he has rejected a mega offer from the Saudi Pro League. He was very close with De Gea before his United exit.
