Manchester United have explained why Matheus Cunha’s signing is still not complete despite their announcement of an agreement with Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Manchester United have officially announced the signing of Matheus Cunha from Wolverhampton Wanderers on a five-year contract worth £62.5 million. The Brazilian forward is Rúben Amorim’s first addition and marks a significant early move to bolster the squad ahead of the new season.
Cunha is considered a crucial reinforcement for a United attack that has lacked sharpness and consistency. Known for his speed, intelligent movement, and adaptability, he is expected to bring renewed energy and tactical variety to the front line.
The fee will be paid in three parts, starting with an initial £20.8 million once the transfer is finalised, with the remaining instalments due over the following year.
At 26, Cunha is set to occupy the left flank of United’s attacking trio, likely displacing Alejandro Garnacho, whose long-term future is in doubt amid growing interest from clubs across Europe.
Why Cunha transfer is still subject to finalisation
Despite United announcing that Cunha will join the club, there has yet to be any sign of the usual press package that accompanies a transfer, such as his first official interview and photos of him signing his new five-year deal.
In a club statement confirming that they have reached an agreement with Wolves, United explained that his signing is still subject to confirming his work visa and registration. There is also little information available regarding whether or not he has completed his medical.
“Manchester United has reached an agreement with Wolverhampton Wanderers for the signing of Matheus Cunha,” the club explained. “The Brazilian forward’s signing is subject to visa and registration.
“The 26-year-old has 13 senior caps for Brazil, and, in his club career, has made 270 appearances and scored 72 goals in the English, Spanish, German and Swiss top flights.
“During two-and-a-half seasons at Wolves, Cunha has scored 33 goals in 92 appearances. Everyone at Manchester United looks forward to welcoming Matheus to Old Trafford.”
Who else are United focusing on securing this summer?
With the transfer window opening on 1 June, United are aiming to make several attacking and midfield additions in the early stages of the summer.

The club have shown strong interest in Brentford winger Bryan Mbeumo, though they face stiff competition from Newcastle, and are also targeting a new striker, with both Viktor Gyökeres and Victor Osimhen reportedly on their radar.
A new midfielder is also on the agenda, as Amorim looks to shape a squad better equipped to meet the physical demands of the Premier League.
At the same time, a number of departures are expected, with United needing to generate funds to support their summer recruitment plans.
