Manchester United provide huge hint over fifth summer signing after surprise ‘advanced talks’ commence

Manchester United have provided a huge hint over their fifth summer signing after surprise ‘advanced talks’ commenced this week.

Manchester United kicked off their summer transfer window in style, landing Matheus Cunha from Wolves and highly rated defender Diego Leon early on.

Following drawn-out talks, Bryan Mbeumo linked up with the squad ahead of their US tour, with RB Leipzig forward Benjamin Šeško sealing his switch earlier last week.

These changes are expected to vastly improve Ruben Amorim’s attack, which was a huge problem across last season.

But the Reds are still eager to make signings before the end of the transfer window, with several sales on the agenda too.

United provide huge hint over fifth summer signing

It has been well documented that United are interested in signing a midfielder this summer, with Carlos Baleba the main target for that position.

Now, it has been reported that Toby Collyer is in ‘advanced talks’ over a loan move to Championship side West Brom for the season. This comes as a slight surprise after Hull City were expecting to bring the young midfielder in.

Those reports hint that United are set to bring in a midfielder as their fifth summer signing, as the depth in the engine room wasn’t the greatest beforehand.

Manuel Ugarte, Casemiro and Kobbie Mainoo are potential partners for Bruno Fernandes but there remain question marks over all of them.

Baleba would be best addition

While every United fan will be hoping that it is Baleba who is signed for this role, that is not a guarantee considering Brighton’s history in such negotiations.

United will have alternative options to the Cameroon international; one being Adam Wharton of Crystal Palace, although that deal wouldn’t be a walk in the park either.

There is probably lower-cost midfielders also being considered, although United will need to assess whether they are worth signing rather than waiting for a top quality option.

But the loan exit of Collyer makes it seem like the Reds are prepared for someone to come into the midfield. We’ve just got to wait and see for who that is.
