Manchester United decided to allow Jadon Sancho to leave the club on loan to Premier League rivals Chelsea in the summer transfer window.

Jadon Sancho joined Chelsea on an initial loan move with the potential for the deal to become an obligation to buy the player.

Manchester United had signed the winger from Borussia Dortmund in the summer of 2021 for over £70 million when he was one of the most highly-rated young talents in the world.

However, the wide-man never managed to flourish at Old Trafford and then things became complicated when Erik ten Hag banished him from the first-team squad at the club.

Sancho and the Dutchman eventually worked things out and he took part in United’s 2024 pre-season tour but it was clear that a move for the player was the preference for all involved.

Chelsea came to the rescue for Sancho and his deal will be made permanent at the end of the season due to their league position.

Sancho’s Chelsea fee changed

United were due to receive £20 million from Chelsea for the transfer of Sancho next summer, but their performances this season have been solid enough to increase that fee despite recent form.

In December, Fabrizio Romano reported that the Blues will instead be paying an additional £5 million for the player, making it a total £25 million fee.

That is handy for United, who need to manage their finances correctly in order to have the best chances of strengthening Ruben Amorim’s squad in the next summer window.

And despite that, United have also been proven correct by Sancho’s form for the Stamford Bridge outfit this season.

United proven correct about Sancho departure

Sancho started well for Chelsea by getting several assists in his opening games, but many who were watching could see that he wasn’t playing too differently to when he was at United.

Chelsea as a team were playing extremely well but now that they’ve hit a dry patch of form, it is clear that Sancho still has the same problems he had during his time at Old Trafford.

The 24-year-old cannot dominate the flank and often needs too much help in order to succeed in his actions. Perhaps he would have fit better in Amorim’s no.10 roles but there are enough question marks surrounding Sancho.

For the Reds, getting the extra cash for Sancho is useful and for now, it seems like they’ve been proven correct about allowing him to depart.
