Manchester United players react to David de Gea’s departure from Old Trafford
David de Gea announced his departure from Manchester United on Saturday afternoon after spending 12 years at Old Trafford.
The Spanish shot-stopper was signed by Sir Alex Ferguson in 2011 to replace Edwin van der Sar and has since made 525 appearances and earned the most clean sheets (190) in the club’s history.
He has won almost every trophy available for The Reds, with the most recent being his second Carabao Cup which came during Ten Hag’s first campaign in charge last season.
Since announcing his exit, De Gea has received messages of appreciation from many in the United squad.
Bruno Fernandes sent an emotional response to the news on his Instagram story, where he plead for the club to provide his former teammate with a proper goodbye.
“You know what I think about you and how much I will miss you bro,” he wrote. “You deserved to say goodbye at the stadium with all the fans cheering you for all the beautiful memories.
“You made history at the club and your name will never be forgotten, and that no one can’t take away from you. All the best for what’s coming for you and your family.”
Meanwhile, Marcus Rashford wrote on Instagram: “You were here from my breakthrough, good luck with your next step brother.” Brazilian midfielder Fred added: “What a great pleasure to play and work with you, legend. One of the great friends I’ve made in football. You have all my respect and admiration and I wish you the best on your next challenges!”
Club captain Harry Maguire uploaded images of the Spaniard captioned: “All the best mate. Legend. Will miss you,” whilst Casemiro wrote: “David, my mate! You made history with Manchester United. You will always be a Red Devil, and these fans will continue to support you wherever your next challenge leads you. You will always be one of us. My best wishes!”
Victor Lindelöf added: “My brother, I love you so much,” whilst young winger Facundo Pellistri stated: “You are a legend and an incredible person, I will miss you.”
Further support for the 32-year-old, from both current and former United players, can be seen in the comments section of his Instagram post.
