Manchester United are considering a surprise transfer U-turn this summer that puts the future of one of Rúben Amorim’s players in danger.
Manchester United are placing a strong focus on outgoings this summer as Rúben Amorim begins his rebuild at Old Trafford.
The club have already wrapped up a £62.5 million deal for Matheus Cunha from Wolves and remain in negotiations with Brentford over Bryan Mbeumo, though their £45 million offer plus £10 million in add-ons has been rejected.
Recruitment efforts continue for a new striker and midfielder, and a move for a goalkeeper is also on the table if André Onana departs.
With multiple players set to leave on free transfers this month, further exits are expected as Amorim reshapes the squad in his vision.
Onana’s future in doubt after transfer U-turn
In the last few weeks, various reports have stated that Onana was expected to remain at United this summer, as the club did not consider signing a new No. 1 a significant enough priority compared to replenishing their attacking and midfield options.
However, a new report from transfer journalist Ben Jacobs has now revealed that the club have adjusted their position, stating that United are determining whether attempting to sign a new No. 1 could still be a worthwhile priority, suggesting that Onana’s future at United is no longer safe.
Amid this, Jacobs details that United have added OGC Nice shot-stopper Marcin Bułka to their transfer list, but that Onana has not yet been informed that he will be sold this summer.
Aston Villa goalkeeper Emi Martínez, who was sent off against United at Old Trafford on the final day of the season, is also on the club’s radar.
Signing a goalkeeper may become a step too far for United
After the club finished 15th in the Premier League table last summer, it became clear that there are many gaping holes in the squad that Amorim will need to patch with fresh talent in the transfer window.
However, with the club’s entire budget being consumed by Cunha and Mbeumo, should a deal for the latter be agreed upon, the rest of their funding will have to come from sales.
United need another top-quality striker in their ranks that can join in the next six weeks, while a good midfielder is also required, which will take up a lot of their further budget.
With there being no guarantee that United will be able to spend another £150 million or so on extra signings if they also want to add a new goalkeeper to the squad, replacing Onana may be a step too far for this window.
