Manchester United were handed a dent to their Champions League hopes after falling to a 2-0 defeat against Newcastle United in the Premier League.

The Reds put in a poor overall performance, dominated for much of the game by the home side and they paid for their fragility after headed goals from Joe Willock and Callum Wilson.

Here are how UtdDistrict rated the players:

David de Gea — 6.5/10

Crucial saves were made in quick succession and was unable to do anything for the two goals conceded.

Diogo Dalot — 4.5/10

It was a tough match-up against Allan Saint-Maximin — who troubled Dalot all game in transition.

Raphaël Varane — 6.5/10

The Frenchmen’s physicality and speed are crucial to United’s defensive system, and it showed again.

Lisandro Martinez – 6.5/10

Multiple times he would be seen in the channels making strong stops and tackles to maintain the United defence together in challenging situations.

Luke Shaw – 6/10

In possession, he is a class act, but his lapses in defensive scenarios were targeted and, on certain occasions, exploited.

Marcel Sabitzer — 5.5/10

Showed a lot of desire but lacked decisiveness in key moments. The final pass was lacking.

Bruno Fernandes – 5.5/10

He failed to influence the game as he usually does, with Newcastle closing down the spaces in which he thrives. Playing deeper also restricted the attacking ingenuity on which his game is built.

Scott McTominay — 4/10

Started the game in a more advanced role, a decision clearly based on his attacking exploits for Scotland during the international break, but was moved back to his more traditional role as the pivot in the second half; offered little on the ball and was lackadaisical off it.

Antony — 5.5/10

Scampered around the pitch with vigour, yet was unable to create much in the final third, despite having the better of Dan Burn for much of the game before being substituted.

Marcus Rashford – 4.5/10

He was largely unnoticed throughout the game, and for someone of his threat, he was shackled by Kieran Trippier.

Wout Weghorst – 3.5/10

His accumulation of 10 touches — the lowest in the game — was synonymous with his performance and lack of presence up front.

Substitutes

Jadon Sancho – 5/10

Unable to make a desirable impact off the bench

Anthony Martial — 6/10

His technical ability and gile boosted a stagnant attack, but without willing runners, his impact was minimal.

Facundo Pellistri — N/A

Fred — N/A

Victor Lindelöf — N/A
