Manchester United rounded their 2022 off with a narrow victory against Wolverhampton Wonderers, with Marcus Rashford securing victory for Erik ten Hag’s men.

With the first half seeing plenty of chances for both sides, neither could capitalise in the opening 45 minutes. United‘s best chance fell to Garnacho, who latched on to a poor back pass from Nelson Semedo before his shot was saved.

Antony also found himself in a good position on multiple occasions, however the Brazilian also failed to find the net as the first half drew to a close.

The second half was Marcus Rashford break the deadlock after coming on as a substitute, keeping up his red-hot form this season so far. He also scored once more, however the goal was ruled out for a handball just as the ball went in.

Goalkeeper

David de Gea – 9/10

David de Gea was certainly busier against Wolves than he had to be against Nottingham Forest, he produced a stunning save to keep the match level on the hour mark from a Neves free-kick. Also made a class save at the death from Jiminez.

Defenders

Aaron Wan-Bissaka – 8/10

Carrying on from his good form in the last two fixtures against Burnley and Forest, Wan-Bissaka was a defensive highlight in the first half. He continued to look settled throughout the game, maintaining his current form with ease.

Raphael Varane – 7/10

Varane did not put much of a foot wrong in the match, and being the only player over 6 feet tall in United’s back line, he marshalled well.

Luke Shaw – 7/10

Filling in at centre-back once again, Shaw had to deal with the dreaded Diego Costa up front. For the majority of the game Shaw, working alongside Varane was able to keep Costa quiet.

Tyrell Malacia – 5/10

Malacia was probably the weakest part of the defensive line for United in the first half,

Midfielders

Casemiro – 5/10

Compared to his last two performances, Casemiro was sub-par today. Having been lucky to escape a booking in the first half, he eventually received a yellow card in the second. Did make some good tackles as the game went on to break up play.

Christian Eriksen – 5/10

Eriksen was quiet today. Had one early involvement, whipping in a cross for Casemiro who’s header flew narrowly over the bar from a corner, but beyond that had minimal impact.

Bruno Fernandes – 6.5/10

Although he was erratic today, it was Fernandes who supplied Rashford with the crucial pass to score the match-winning goal.

Forwards

Alejandro Garnacho – 5/10

Having United’s best chance of the first half, Garnacho was lively and drove at the Wolves defence whenever he could, but his lack of significant experience meant he became stuck at times. He was substituted at half-time for Rashford.

Anthony Martial – 7/10

Although he was not too involved in a lot of play, he was integral to many of the chances United received throughout the game. Ten Hag will be happy with his overall performance.

Antony – 5/10

Antony saw plenty of action in the first half, however his actions blew hot and cold. He made some decisive passes and had a few shots on target, but also left a bit to be desired in his link-up play throughout the game.

Substitutes

Marcus Rashford – 9/10

He is THE man at the moment. Coming off the bench after being dropped for disciplinary reasons, it was him who broke the deadlock and completely turned the fixture on it’s head.

Fred – 7/10

Played a great role in midfield and really increased the tempo of the fixture as it came to a close.

Donny van de Beek – N/A

Harry Maguire – N/A

Anthony Elanga – N/A
