Manchester United will have their first trip to Wembley under Erik ten Hag after seeing off Nottingham Forest in a professional manner.

After a dull first half in which they dominated the ball, Manchester United showed their class in scoring twice and keeping Forest out of their own net in the second.

Starting XI

Tom Heaton – 6/10

Routine game for the backup keeper. Made a great one-handed save from Dennis towards the end but not much of note throughout.

Luke Shaw – 6/10

Effective down the flank in his link-up with Alejandro Garnacho. Kept the left flank quiet in defence.

Lisandro Martinez – 6/10

Standard game for the Argentine. Looked a bit shaky in the first half under Forest pressure but responded well in the second to get the ball forward in transition.

Raphael Varane – 7/10

Marshalled the backline well and ensured it was another clean sheet at Old Trafford for Manchester United this season.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka – 6/10

Not much of note from the right-back. Looks to be getting more comfortable on the ball.

Fred – 7/10

Scored what could be described as the most open goal ever seen at Old Trafford. Worked well with Casemiro to control the game and press on in the second half.

Casemiro – 6/10

Failed to get a good grip on the game in the first half but quickly showed his class to control the game throughout the second. Should have scored around the 60th-minute mark but hit the ball straight at the keeper.

Bruno Fernandes – 9/10

Fantastic performance from the Portuguese star. Represented United’s key creative outlet in the match and made a beautiful pass to Marcus Rashford prior to Fred’s goal.

Antony – 7/10

Not a bad game from the Brazilian by any means but struggled to really make a proper impact on the game. A couple of nice efforts including an absolute rocket of a volley.

Weghorst – 7/10

Played well with his back to goal and hit the post when given a rare chance. Should have had a pretty blatant penalty. Looking more and more comfortable in this side.

Alejandro Garnacho – 8/10

Caused a lot of problems down the left-hand side. If United can tie him down to a new contract, they’ll have a proper gem on their hands.

Substitutes

Marcus Rashford – 7/10

Not his usual dangerous performance off the bench but a solid cameo for the attacker who grabbed an assist for Fred’s goal. Definitely a worthy decision to rest him for the first half ahead of an intense run of consecutive games approaching.

Jadon Sancho – 8/10

Great to see Sancho off the bench. Looked to have more attacking intent and desire to beat his man. Hopefully the start of a big resurgence from the winger.

Anthony Martial – 7/10

Scored off the bench which speaks for itself. Floated around the box but had only a couple of touches.

Harry Maguire – 6/10

Solid when he came on but nothing of note.

Victor Lindelof – 6/10

See above.
