Manchester United are reportedly planning to offer a new contract to one player who is ‘deeply committed’ to staying at Old Trafford.
Michael Carrick’s start to life as Manchester United’s head coach has been close to flawless so far, highlighted by an impressive 2–0 victory over Manchester City just days into his tenure.
After only three days on the training ground, United delivered a stunningly dominant performance against Pep Guardiola’s side, outplaying their rivals and sparking excitement about the squad’s true potential.
Carrick was appointed following the dismissal of Ruben Amorim, whose teams were often criticised for lacking intensity and energy.
In stark contrast, the display against City showcased a reinvigorated United side, with every player committed to the fight; pressing aggressively, fulfilling their defensive responsibilities, and operating as a cohesive unit throughout the 90 minutes.
United planning to offer new contract to ‘deeply committed’ star
Part of United’s strong display against City was due to an improved defensive line, with Harry Maguire returning to the team after several weeks out with injury.
Maguire was outstanding on the day and the veteran defender’s contract at Old Trafford expires at the end of the season.
According to a report from TeamTalk, Maguire is deeply committed to staying at the club and views it as his long-term home despite recent uncertainties.
It was added that United are planning to offer Maguire new terms, but it would only be a one-year contract extension and his wages, which are currently around £190,000-a-week, would be cut down significantly.
Strong performances could potentially sway the board towards a multi-year contract, the report added, but skepticism lingers amid United’s push for squad rejuvenation.
Should United give Maguire new contract?
United’s defensive options are currently strong, especially with the club moving back to a four-at-the-back system after Amorim’s departure.
Maguire is one of five senior centre-backs at Old Trafford and he will be 33 years of age when the season ends. It is understandable that the club don’t want to offer him more than a one-year deal.
If he decides to stay then the club would benefit from having his experience in the dressing room, as well as a unique defensive option different to the others in the squad.
But United probably shouldn’t adjust their demands and offer him a longer-term contract. It will be interesting to see how things go.
