Manchester United send the perfect Jarrad Branthwaite message, shows they’ve learnt from 2022 mistake
Manchester United have sent the perfect message regarding their chase of Jarrad Branthwaite which shows they’ve learnt from a prior mistake.
The Reds are looking to sign Branthwaite to strengthen their backline following the departure of Raphaël Varane.
After seeing an opening bid of £43 million rejected by Everton for their star defender, United are now displaying their stance on the situation.
According to a report from ESPN, United have told their Premier League competitors that they are not willing to spend £70 million or more on one player this summer.
It was also explained that the Reds could walk away from their preferred option if the Merseyside club do not show a willingness to negotiate a transfer fee.
Yet, most importantly, the report added that United are wary of spending too much time trying to seal a deal for Branthwaite and are willing to walk away to focus on other targets.
There are several positions for the club to focus on this summer and a long process trying to get one deal over the line could impact other areas that United need to address.
This was a problem during the 2022 summer transfer window, when Erik ten Hag’s side were laser-focused on trying to get a deal for Frenkie de Jong over the line.
De Jong ultimately ended up staying at Barcelona, and United had injected so much effort into a potential deal that they had to scramble around in the final few days of the transfer window to sign players.
Antony and Casemiro were both signed for monumental fees and while the former Real Madrid midfielder showed his quality during his debut campaign at Old Trafford, neither player looks like they will be key for the club in the coming years.
Branthwaite is clearly an ideal signing for INEOS this summer, but if they walk away from the deal soon – due to the factors mentioned – it shows that one important change has already been implemented under their leadership.
