Manchester United have missed out on signing Ruben Amorim favourite Geovany Quenda and could be looking at alternatives ahead of the summer transfer window.
Ruben Amorim is looking ahead to the summer transfer window, which is set to be an important few months for those at Manchester United.
There are expected to be many incomings and outgoings as the club look to support Amorim and help him improve his current squad.
However, it was recently revealed that one of the Portuguese manager’s preferred targets, Geovany Quenda, has instead decided to join Chelsea.
That leaves United with the potential need of securing an alternative to Quenda, who was touted to becoming the new right wingback in Amorim’s system.
Stam says United should consider Frimpong signing
Former United defender Jaap Stam has suggested a potential option that United should look at following Quenda’s decision to move to a Premier League rival.
The ex-defender believes that the Netherlands international Jeremie Frimpong is a “very interesting” player and would suit the way Amorim wants to play.
Although, Stam also wonders whether the club want to shy away from bringing in Dutch players after some unsuccessful signings under Erik ten Hag.
“Jeremie Frimpong can play as a right-wing back having also played as a right winger and a right back,” the 52-year-old told Makthavare.se.
“He has pace and is very direct and can score goals as well as create chances for his team-mates. I think he would be a very interesting player for Manchester United to look at, he would fit the style of play on the right-hand side.
“The only issue might be if the club don’t want to continue bringing in Dutch players going forward. But he has a lot of quality and is doing so well in a tough division in Germany, I think he would be a great fit for the system at United.”
Frimpong eyeing new challenge in summer
Various reports have stated that Frimpong has a £34 million release clause in his contract at Bayer Leverkusen contract, which can be activated this summer.
Sky Germany have also claimed that the 24-year-old is eyeing a new challenge this summer, with a move to the Premier League emerging as a “concrete option.”
Yet, it appears that Liverpool could be in the driving seat to sign the player as they look for replacements for the outgoing Trent Alexander-Arnold.
United were heavily linked with Frimpong in the past but it remains to be seen whether the club will take Stam’s advice and reignite that interest once again this summer.
