Manchester United may have new summer transfer priority after interesting David Ornstein update
Manchester United are preparing for a busy summer transfer window to help bolster the squad of Ruben Amorim for next season.
It has been a difficult season for Manchester United and the mid-season appointment of Ruben Amorim has not turned things around.
The new United boss has struggled to adapt the team to his new system, even though there have been recent signs of improvement.
United chiefs have an important job in the summer window, with several positions in need of strengthening so that Amorim and has side have a better chance of showing improvements next term.
Several targets ahead of the season’s close had already been reported on over the last few months, including Sporting star Geovany Quenda, who has since decided to join Chelsea.
Ornstein interesting update on United transfers
Reports emerged on Friday morning that Chelsea had swooped in to steal Quenda from United’s grasp with a very attractive deal. The Sporting sensation will be allowed to stay at the Portuguese club on loan while also earning a staggering eight-year deal at Stamford Bridge.
United would not have been able to compete with that offer in the summer, let alone agreeing the deal mid-season and now fans are expecting the club to look for alternative right wingback options.
However, the latest updates from David Ornstein has suggested that there is no guarantee that United will target a right wingback, with other positions being at the top of the agenda for those at Old Trafford.
“Despite where he played under Ruben Amorim at Sporting CP, 17-year-old Quenda has mainly been used as a winger since the head coach joined United and that is where Chelsea intend to deploy him — on either side. So I’m not sure United would have been signing him as a right wing-back… but that’s all hypothetical now,” Ornstein wrote on The Athletic.
“United’s interest suggests they will be looking at other/similar opportunities on the market but that doesn’t guarantee they will do something. Mazraoui seems to be flourishing in that right-sided role, so it won’t be panic stations. I expect United to make a handful of signings this summer and none of them are likely to stay with/be loaned back to their existing club in the way Quenda is going to be following this Chelsea deal.
“So although they were strongly in for him, it perhaps wasn’t feasible for United in the end anyway. As you say, Dalot and Amad are also options… perhaps this position isn’t at the very top of their agenda.”
United’s potential new transfer priority
Sometimes you will strengthen a position because there is a great option available on the market. If they go elsewhere, it doesn’t necessarily mean that you will stay looking in that position.
For United, a potential solution to this situation would be placing Amad, who has excelled under Amorim, at wingback on a more permanent basis. The Ivorian has shown previously that he can be just as dangerous in the final third when playing in that position.
And so, instead of targeting a wingback to play behind Amad, United may instead look for a potential option for the right-sided no.10 role to play in front of the 22-year-old.
Some fans are calling for the signing of Brentford star Bryan Mbeumo for that position, which he would likely fit well, while other options are also likely.
United could also look internally to strengthen the right wingback depth – with Bendito Mantato touted as a potential option – while focusing their funds on signing a proven goalscorer up front and bolstering the midfield.
