Manchester United’s latest stance on Kobbie Mainoo has been revealed as Ruben Amorim finalises his plans for the 2025/26 Premier League campaign.
It’s under three weeks until Manchester United kick off in the Premier League at Old Trafford against Arsenal, meaning Rúben Amorim will have a clear idea of his strongest squad heading into the campaign.
Following Marcus Rashford’s loan exit to Barcelona, Tyrell Malacia, Jadon Sancho, Alejandro Garnacho and Antony are all expected to follow suit, with all transfers hopefully completed in the coming weeks.
Another name that frequently appeared in the conversation about possible outgoings was Kobbie Mainoo. The 20-year-old’s previous league campaign was marred by injuries, and at times, he was frozen out of the midfield, making only 19 starts compared to 25 in his breakthrough season.
It was believed that Mainoo had fallen down the pecking order of Amorim’s central midfield. There was also a growing expectation that the midfielder would be offloaded for a significant fee, which would have tempted United in hopes of gathering funds for a summer rebuild.
United make final decision on Mainoo’s future
Manchester United have no plans to sell Kobbie Mainoo despite interest from Tottenham, according to GiveMeSport. The 20-year-old midfielder has been the subject of informal enquiries from Spurs, but United are focused on giving him a bigger role. Mainoo is using pre-season to prove himself rather than push for a move.
Mainoo has two years left on a £25,000-per-week contract, and talks over a new deal have stalled, prompting Spurs to explore a potential alternative.
However, United are not actively seeking a buyer and remain confident in his future at the club. After making 37 appearances in all competitions last season, Mainoo is determined to secure a place in England’s squad for the 2026 World Cup.
The youngster is highly rated by teammates and club legends alike, with Paul Scholes calling him “special.” He recently started in United’s pre-season win over West Ham, showing Amorim’s trust in his abilities.
Tottenham boss Thomas Frank is keen to strengthen his midfield, especially after missing out on Morgan Gibbs-White. However, United have given no indication that they are open to offers, making a deal unlikely at this stage.
Mainoo’s contract negotiations continue
United remain in talks with Mainoo over a new contract, amid interest from other sides in the Premier League, as the midfielder currently earns £25,000-a-week.
But, as per the GiveMeSport report, United are not looking to sell Mainoo and see him as a key part of manager Amorim’s plans.
Mainoo is said to be seeking a new deal worth around £180,000 per week. While United could profit from a sale under Premier League Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR), given that he’s an Academy graduate, the club is focused on keeping him.
GiveMeSport adds that United have not been actively seeking a buyer and has only received informal enquiries. Mainoo remains central to the club’s future, and talks over a long-term stay are ongoing.
