Manchester United are set to advance discussions with 20-year-old Kobbie Mainoo as they look to fend off any rumours of a potential exit.
For the vast majority of the 2025/26 campaign, Kobbie Mainoo failed to secure a spot in the Manchester United starting XI, with Ruben Amorim preferring Bruno Fernandes in his position.
Due to Amorim’s midfield only consisting of two midfielders, there was no room for the young Englishman, with both Fernandes and Casemiro keeping him out of the side.
Mainoo’s situation has since changed, however, with the 20-year-old starting all six of United’s Premier League games under Michael Carrick, in which they have won five and drawn one.
Since reemerging as a mainstay in the Reds’ XI, rumours have started to surround Mainoo’s contract situation, with his current contract set to expire in the summer of 2027.
United schedule Mainoo talks
As reported by TEAMtalk, via The People’s Person, the Red Devils have scheduled a meeting with Mainoo’s camp in an attempt to accelerate a contract extension as they look to deter interest from other clubs.
Mainoo was linked with a January loan move due to his lack of game time, although following Amorim’s departure, he chose to stay put and fight for his place.
The English midfielder and United are described as keen to ‘accelerate discussions’ regarding a long-term future, with a meeting being scheduled for the end of March.
This meeting will take place during the next international break, with it being hoped by Mainoo that he will be back in Thomas Tuchel’s England camp.
Mainoo deserving a better contract
As detailed by the report Mainoo’s contract only runs until the summer of 2027, with United holding an option to extend it by a further year if they plead to do so.
“Mainoo’s current contract runs until 2027, with United holding an option to extend it by a further year to 2028, thus putting the club in a strong negotiating position.
“However, the midfielder remains on the terms he signed upon breaking into the first team – a deal that now lags behind his status in terms of salary,” the report states.

“Despite being one of the lowest-paid members of the senior squad, Mainoo’s performances have convinced United’s hierarchy that he deserves a contract more reflective of his current role and potential.
“Sources indicate that the club is prepared to offer significantly improved terms to reward and recognise his progress and fend off any potential suitors.”
Mainoo’s resurgence within the Reds’ squad has been one of United’s stories of the season, and it seems set to continue with him now on track to secure a much-improved contract at his boyhood club.
