Manchester United legend sends ruthless dig to two stars Ruben Amorim defended, his point is spot on

One Manchester United legend has sent a ruthless dig in the direction of two stars who Ruben Amorim has regularly defended.

Manchester United’s start to the season has been inconsistent, leaving them 10th in the Premier League after seven fixtures.

Defeats to Arsenal, Manchester City, and Brentford have been balanced by wins against Chelsea, Sunderland, and Burnley, while their meeting with Fulham ended in a draw.

Ruben Amorim’s side have shown glimpses of potential alongside clear shortcomings, but many fans feel the team has yet to make the progress they expected.

There have been many defensive problems since the Portuguese boss took charge, mainly coming from those who stand between the sticks.

Amorim finally decided to give Senne Lammens his debut against Sunderland and the 23-year-old goalkeeper was awarded the Man of the Match.

He has previously trusted André Onana and Altay Bayındır in net and even though both made mistakes, the manager regularly defended the duo.

But United legend Peter Schmeichel has slammed the two goalkeepers and claimed that they have been costing the team points in the last couple of years.

“When I played – and I think it was the same for Edwin [van der Sar] and David de Gea – we had to save the team 10 points a season,” the goalkeeping legend told BBCSport.

“Not give them away… and that’s what we’ve gotten used to in the last couple of years. Goalkeepers giving goals and points away.

“It was nice to see a clean sheet and really good and solid goalkeeping performance [from Senne Lammens against Sunderland].”

Schmeichel’s point is spot on

United are far away from being a top team in Europe but the rule for most of those teams is that you need to have a reliable goalkeeper to progress.

Manchester City’s true success only came when Ederson arrived at the Etihad Stadium while Liverpool signing Alisson had a similar impact. It is no coincidence that United’s best two teams in the last 30 years had Schmeichel and Van der Sar between the sticks.

The Danish legend’s point is completely correct. We’ve become accustomed to these goalkeeping mistakes rather than having someone who will save the team in difficult moments.

Hopefully, Lammens will be able to help United turn that corner and offer more stability to the position which some claim is the hardest role to play in football.
