“I think…” Manchester United legend delivers damning verdict on Fulham win, it’s the harsh truth
Manchester United legend Edwin van der Saar has delivered a harsh truth surrounding Rúben Amorim’s 1-0 victory over Fulham on Sunday evening in the Premier League.
Manchester United earned their fourth win in five matches as Lisandro Martínez’s deflected strike secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Fulham in the Premier League on Sunday evening.
The match began with United on the back foot, allowing Fulham to dominate possession. Alex Iwobi tested André Onana with several speculative efforts, though none caused any real concern for the United keeper.
United struggled to create chances in the first half, with Fulham’s defence standing firm. Amad was kept quiet by a superb performance from Antonee Robinson, who marked the winger out of the game with ease.
The second half brought little improvement from United, and with frustration mounting, Rasmus Højlund was replaced by Joshua Zirkzee with 30 minutes left. Rúben Amorim, visibly animated on the touchline, looked unimpressed by his side’s lacklustre performance.
The deadlock was finally broken in the 78th minute when Lisandro Martínez fired a speculative shot from distance that deflected past a helpless Bernd Leno. Amad thought he had added a second in stoppage time, only for his effort to be ruled out for offside.
Despite an uninspiring display, United’s 1-0 victory was a crucial result, keeping their momentum alive under Amorim.
Van der Saar’s damning United vs Fulham verdict
Former United goalkeeper Edwin van der Saar was in attendance at Craven Cottage, having played for both clubs during his time in the Premier League.
Speaking with TNT Sports after the result, the 54-year-old was asked for his thoughts on the performance. He gave a rather damning verdict, explaining that although Amorim will appreciate the win, he feels United’s players did not play well.
“The result is nice for the winning manager, but I think the performance wasn’t great,” Van der Saar explained pitchside after the result.
“I think that was the only shot on goal from Lisandro Martinez.
“You need to stabilise the club, performances you need to have on the Saturday and the Wednesday.”
Van der Saar’s verdict is the harsh truth
Although the Dutch legend’s words are very blunt, they ring true. United did not play well.
The defence has to be given their flowers after they marshalled Fulham’s attacking threat, but there was such a disconnect between United’s midfield and attacking lines, with no threat being offered from the front three.
Amad was marked out of the game, while Højlund had a “nightmare” playing as the striker. While Alejandro Garnacho looked bright, his efforts produced little reward.
The win is a big one for United in the context of their season, it being the fourth victory in five games across all competitions, but they cannot continue to try and win games in this fashion.
