Rúben Amorim could finally see the return of one of his forgotten stars as Manchester United host Burnley at Old Trafford.
Manchester United return to Premier League action on Saturday afternoon as Rúben Amorim’s side welcome Scott Parker’s Burnley to Old Trafford.
It has been a difficult start to the campaign, with United sitting 16th in the table on just one point from two matches, having suffered defeat to Arsenal and been held by Fulham.
Their most recent outing only added to the frustration. Away to Grimsby Town in the Carabao Cup, United fell 2-0 behind in the first half before mounting a comeback, only to be beaten 12-11 in a dramatic penalty shootout.
Back on home turf this weekend, Amorim will be eager for his team to finally deliver their first victory of the season.
Mazraoui could return vs Burnley
Noussair Mazraoui has become a rather unforgotten player across the last month or so, having not featured for United since their pre-season fixture against Leeds United in mid-July.
The Moroccan international was a favourite of Amorim’s last season but has been unavailable due to a thigh injury. However, Amorim confirmed late last week that Mazraoui may be able to return this week.
“No, maybe he is going to return next week, we will see,” Amorim said on Sunday afternoon. “But he’s near, we are just finishing some drills with him to be sure that he’s not going to have another problem.”
Meanwhile, United will be hoping to see the return of Lisandro Martínez to action soon after the club return from international duty as he continues his rehabilitation, while all other first-team players are fit to play.
Amorim must make up for poor start vs Burnley
Manchester United’s opening three fixtures have been far from ideal, with Rúben Amorim still chasing his first victory since taking charge.
The club spent over £200 million on four new players during the summer, with high-profile arrivals Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, and Benjamin Šeško brought in to spearhead a fresh era.
Yet, the season began with that narrow 1-0 defeat to Arsenal, the draw against Fulham, and the unforgettable defeat against Grimsby.
After a lively and encouraging pre-season campaign, Amorim has quickly found himself under growing scrutiny, with expectations unmet and patience inside and outside the club once again starting to wear thin.
With the Burnley tie the only game left before the international break and the head coach reportedly set to hold crunch talks with his bosses after the game, the coming fixture could be the last chance for him to save his job.
