Manchester United have reportedly identified five managerial candidates as potential replacements for Ruben Amorim if he cannot turn things around at Old Trafford.
Manchester United’s start to the season has been their worst in the Premier League since 1992/93, with just four points taken from their opening four fixtures.
That year, the Reds managed to turn things around and win the first of their 13 league titles, but a similar resurgence appears highly unlikely now.
Defeats against Manchester City and Arsenal, a draw with Fulham, and a narrow win over Burnley have left them struggling, while an unexpected Carabao Cup exit to Grimsby Town has deepened the frustration.
Ruben Amorim’s insistence on sticking to his approach, along with some of his selections, has drawn growing criticism. Up next for United is a home clash with Chelsea at Old Trafford.
Amorim has three-game timeline to save United job
While many outlets are claiming that the United hierarchy have full faith in Amorim to turn things around at Old Trafford, there is a new report that suggests the Portuguese boss has a specific timeline to follow.
According to The Mirror, Amorim effectively has three games to save his job as United boss, with the upcoming games before the international break seen as crucial for him.
It was claimed that although the United hierarchy are insisting they fully back Amorim, they will assess his situation and the trajectory of the team after their next three games.
United face Chelsea at home this weekend before travelling to play Brentford next Saturday. They will then host Sunderland at Old Trafford in the third and final game before the October international break.
The Reds will then face Liverpool when they return to action but this report suggests that Amorim’s position could be in danger if there are not positive results in these next three games.
United identify five managerial candidates
Just like when the Reds were considering sacking Erik ten Hag in the summer of 2024, there are not many top class replacements waiting in the wings.
As things stand, per the previously mentioned report, there are five managerial candidates United have identified as potential replacements but four of those are currently in job roles.
Gareth Southgate is the only manager not currently working, as he remains unemployed following his England departure last year.
The other options include three Premier League managers, with Crystal Palace’s Oliver Glanser, Fulham boss Marco Silva and Bournemouth’s Andoni Iraola being considered.
It was also claimed that Mauricio Pochettino is being considered. He is currently the manager of the USA national team and has previously been linked with an Old Trafford move.
