Rasmus Højlund has been terrible at Manchester United this season and his performances have left his future at the club in doubt.
Manchester United ended their disastrous campaign in the worst possible way after losing 1-0 to Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League final.
Ruben Amorim’s men dominated possession but were toothless in the final third. Spurs were content with defending deep and backed themselves against a tragic United attack.
Rasmus Højlund’s biggest impact was a looping header after a scramble in the box which was cleared off the line by Micky van de Ven. Otherwise, United’s £72 million striker did very little during his time on the pitch.
However, it is no surprise. His form heading into the final was back-to-back performances where you could argue it was his worst of the season – and that’s saying a lot.
Patience has ran out with Højlund from supporters and it appears like those within the club are ready to cut their losses with the 2023 signing as well.
Hojlund placed on transfer list at United
The latest reports from the Manchester Evening News following on from the defeat in Bilbao state that the Reds are going to make Højlund available for transfer this summer.
It is already known that they are looking for a new starting striker but that could also allow Højlund to become a backup, or even head out on loan.
But the Reds cannot continue to put senior players worth millions on loan and perhaps taking a loss on some of these players is worthwhile.
Reports from Fabrizio Romano have added that Inter are considering the Danish forward as an option this summer and other Italian teams are also eyeing the United player.
After an unforgivable season at Old Trafford, the 22-year-old could be the latest to move on in a window where many exits are anticipated.
United history will likely repeat itself with Højlund sale
Should Højlund depart this summer, it would be absolutely no surprise to see him suddenly produce a dramatic upturn in form at his new club. In fact, it feels inevitable.
Without the pressure of United weighing him down, as well as the competitiveness of the Premier League, Højlund will probably look like a young striker worth taking a gamble on. And that’s the problem.
If Antony wasn’t on loan at Real Betis and hadn’t spent any time at Old Trafford, there would undoubtably be some United fans calling for that exciting Brazilian winger to be on the club’s summer wishlist.
Scott McTominay left permanently to join Napoli and looks like one of the best midfielders around in Italy. Will the trend continue with Højlund? Probably.
But that doesn’t mean United shouldn’t sell him. Perhaps the bigger problem is identifying the reason why these players are crashing and burning at Old Trafford.
Recruitment has to be better, but it feels like there’s something more at the club and it’s difficult for anyone to explain how to fix that.
