Manchester United have decided to keep “amazing” star after signing Matheus Cunha, they want to sell his positional rival

Manchester United have reportedly decided to keep an “amazing” player this summer, following the signing of Matheus Cunha.

Manchester United are looking to strengthen their attacking options this summer, following a disappointing 2024/25 season that saw them finish 15th in the Premier League and struggle for goals throughout the campaign.

Bruno Fernandes led the scoring with 19 goals, while Alejandro Garnacho and Amad both contributed 11. Rasmus Højlund scored 10, but no other player reached double figures in any competition.

The club have already completed a £62.5 million deal for Matheus Cunha and remain hopeful of landing Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo. However, Tottenham are reportedly trying to hijack the move for the Cameroon international.

However, Amorim is also expected to try to help improve many of his current forward line, with Amad and Joshua Zirkzee cementing themselves as key figures in the latter months of last season while Mason Mount and Kobbie Mainoo return from injury.

United have decided to keep Zirkzee next season

Zirkzee’s start to life at United was a hard one, having arrived at the club with no pre-season. Despite scoring the winner against Fulham on his debut, he found it difficult to assimilate into Premier League football, and rumours were linking him with an exit just months after he arrived.

However, since the turn of 2025, Zirkzee has been able to cement himself as a fantastic player under Amorim, and according to Corriere dello Sport‘s Sunday pages, United have now decided that the Dutchman is a player they want to keep at Old Trafford.

The news comes amid United being willing to let Zirkzee’s positional rival, Højlund, go in the coming months, with Inter Milan keen on signing him, as new boss Cristian Chivu seeks to reinvent the club’s front line.

United are reportedly seeking around £38 million for Højlund this summer, but Inter would prefer to sign him on loan with the option to buy.

Cunha could help Zirkzee explode at United

It has become clear over the last 12 months that Zirkee is at his best when he combines with others. One reason he did not perform well at times is that his attacking teammates were sometimes selfish.

Players such as Garnacho, who are raw and keen to score, often chose to keep the ball and shoot rather than play in combination with their teammates last season, leaving others such as Zirkzee and Højlund out to dry.

However, Cunha’s arrival will see Garnacho replaced with a very intelligent player on the left flank, while both Mbeumo and Amad, who can play on the right, are naturally team players.

The signing of the 26-year-old Brazilian international in particular could help Zirkzee become “amazing” next season, as the Dutchman thrives when playing alongside other intelligent players.

Although he is not a traditional No. 9, there is a real chance that the 23-year-old could explode as a facilitative striker, allowing the other attackers around him freedom to thrive across Amorim’s front line.
