Manchester United has already made a decision about starting Senne Lammens against Liverpool, following his brilliant performance against Sunderland.
Manchester United will go into the international break in a buoyant mood after Rúben Amorim’s side earned a 2–0 victory over Sunderland on Saturday afternoon.
The Reds started on the front foot and wasted little time taking the lead, as Mason Mount produced a deft touch and calm finish to open the scoring. United remained in control for much of the half, though Sunderland goalkeeper Robin Roefs impressed with several fine saves to keep his team in the contest.
Benjamin Šeško doubled United’s advantage after 30 minutes with a tidy finish from close range. Sunderland were briefly handed hope when they were awarded a penalty before half-time, but the decision was overturned following an on-field review.
The second half saw both sides battle for control, with Amorim introducing Patrick Chinazaekpere Dorgu and Matheus Cunha to add fresh energy down the left flank. Despite continued pressure, a third goal proved elusive.
Still, resilient defending from Matthijs de Ligt and Luke Shaw, along with a sharp late save from debutant goalkeeper Senne Lammens, ensured United recorded their first clean sheet of the season and collected a valuable three Premier League points.
Lammens was very solid on his debut
Starting ahead of Altay Bayındır in goal, Lammens kept the club’s first clean sheet of the season as United closed out the 2-0 win.
The Belgian made three saves across the 90 minutes, including a one-on-one at the death, had 52 touches, and made two high claims, much to the delight of those at Old Trafford.
Amid the consistent problems United have had in goal across the last few seasons, Lammens was solid, calm, and collected despite the high-pressure environment of being the goalkeeper at Old Trafford.
“It’s important in the Premier League keeping clean sheets, you have chances to score and then to keep the clean sheet in the second half was so important,” his teammate Mason Mount said.
“He was solid, when we were under pressure, the option was Ben [Sesko] and we worked off that. Buzzing for him, everyone was around him today, it can be tough making your first start we wat to be together and I felt that today so we keep moving forward.”
Lammens set to start against Liverpool
United have a two-week break to recoup and work on the good football shown against Sunderland, and their next fixture is set to come against Liverpool.
According to journalist Ben Jacobs, now that Lammens has made his debut, he is expected to get a run of games in goal under Amorim, which includes the tie at Anfield in 15 days’ time.
Last time out in Liverpool, United played very well under Amorim, initially taking the lead through Lisandro Martínez before Amad then brought the score back following two goals from Liverpool.
The current Premier League champions are looking to defend their crown and will see this United tie as a way of putting further distance between the two clubs, but amid dodgy form for Arne Slot’s side, Amorim may look to throw a real spanner in the works.
