Manchester United have already made up their minds on Kobbie Mainoo’s future amid January transfer interest from Newcastle.
Kobbie Mainoo broke into Manchester United’s senior side under Erik ten Hag, making his Premier League debut in November 2023.
He quickly impressed, shining in a standout display against Everton before establishing himself as Casemiro’s regular midfield partner.
Mainoo capped off his breakthrough season by scoring the winner in the FA Cup final, then went on to represent England at Euro 2024, starting in the final defeat to Spain.
Since Rúben Amorim’s arrival at Old Trafford, though, the 20-year-old has struggled for consistent minutes. Frustrated by his reduced role, he even pushed for a loan move in the summer, but the club rejected the request.
United will not let Mainoo leave in January
It has emerged in recent weeks that Premier League rivals Newcastle would be interested in taking Mainoo on loan or permanently in the January transfer window amid his continuing struggles.
Eddie Howe is reportedly a big fan of the English midfielder, and with the player wanting game time ahead of the 2026 World Cup, a move to St. James’ Park could be an attractive one on a temporary basis.
However, according to FootballInsider, United have already made it very clear that any suggestion of a move for Mainoo mid-season will fall on deaf ears, as the club is utterly determined to keep their star Academy graduate.
After blocking any potential move in the summer for Mainoo despite his request to leave, United are set to continue with this stance and make sure they hold on to the 20-year-old.
Amorim’s future has no bearing on Mainoo
United’s strong stance on keeping Mainoo comes somewhat against Amorim’s apparent feelings, with the midfielder currently unable to start in front of Bruno Fernandes, Manuel Ugarte, or Casemiro.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe has previously expressed that he’s aware a club like United should be built around players like Mainoo, who represent United’s long-standing history of trusting young Academy players.
With Amorim under intense pressure following poor results so far this season, there is a debate to be had that Mainoo’s career could benefit if the head coach is relieved of his duties.
However, it looks as if United retain faith that their young star will eventually break into the first team regardless of whether or not Amorim remains in a job.
