Manchester United fans won’t like what Ruben Amorim admitted after brutal Southampton comment
Ruben Amorim has hinted that he has to try and work with the Manchester United players who don’t fit into his system due to the financial situation of the club.
Manchester United won 3-1 against Southampton on Thursday evening following a late hat-trick from Amad at Old Trafford.
Despite the end result, Ruben Amorim’s side were largely disappointing and were fortunate to come away with all three points.
Amad’s excellence was matched by poor performances from many United men, several of whom have failed to make significant impacts since Amorim’s arrival.
Amorim’s honest admission about United players
Amorim was honest after the game when discussing the performance of his team and he was asked by Paul Scholes about how the players are adapting to his demands.
“Of course, they are not used to playing like this,” he replied. “You have to cover a lot of space, you have to jump, we have to change which player is jumping on the press.
“With the ball, we saw the team has some patterns when the ball is in the sides of the pitch but then we lose the duels.
“It’s hard to explain, we don’t have the training so I can’t tell you whether they can do it or not, but it’s a different system and it’s so completely different to what they used to do.”
When a manager comes into a club with a new system, it is expected that they will be able to change the squad quickly and bring in players suited to their system.
However, while Amorim admits that some players do not have the right profiles to play in his preferred style, the head coach also explains that he has to improve those players due to the club’s current “situation”.
“I don’t know how long it is going to take, but the profiles… sometimes you can understand it’s not the right ones,” continued Amorim.
“But we have to improve players and we know the situation of the club, you have to continue.”
United fans won’t be happy
It just seems wrong that a Manchester United manager looks like he’s going to be so limited with how much he can spend in the transfer windows.
United are trying to play a complete different style and some players simply won’t be good enough for that, and the idea that Amorim will have to ‘make do’ with some of them won’t be something fans are entirely happy about.
On the other hand, there are players who have struggled recently that should be able to produce in this system.
Joshua Zirkzee should be an example, with many now calling for the Dutch international to start after some solid cameos off the bench in recent games. He was booed off the Old Trafford pitch a few weeks ago and looked in torrid form.
A lot of these talking points end up boiling down to confidence and Amorim will probably need to figure out more ways of giving certain players that belief.
