Manchester United fans appeared to send a clear message to Ruben Amorim during the victory over Wolves on Monday evening.
Manchester United claimed a convincing 4-1 win over Wolves in the Premier League, with Bruno Fernandes, Bryan Mbeumo and Mason Mount all getting on the scoresheet.
United started strongly, controlling the match from the outset, while Wolves played like a side still searching for their first victory of the season.
Their opener wasn’t the most eye-catching, but Fernandes reacted well to put his team ahead. Despite their dominance, United still allowed Wolves to level with a poor goal conceded just before half-time.
After the break, the visitors were far more assured, and further goals from Fernandes, Mbeumo and Mount wrapped up a comfortable and professional result.
United fans sent clear message to Amorim during Wolves win
Kobbie Mainoo was named on the bench for United once again at the Molineux Stadium although this time he did come off the bench.
When the 20-year-old midfielder was introduced for Casemiro after 78 minutes, the travelling United supporters made a clear point through their applause for Mainoo.
“Loud cheers from away section at Kobbie Mainoo’s introduction. Casemiro’s name is chanted as he goes off, then fans sing for Mainoo to same tune,” Laurie Whitwell wrote on X.
It was a similar reaction when the academy graduate came off the bench at Old Trafford a couple of weeks ago against Everton.
There are rumours that Mainoo wants to leave on loan in January due to a lack of game-time under Amorim and if the manager was unsure about how fans felt about the situation before, he is not now.
United is all about developing youth and the supporters know that best. Seeing a boyhood fan in the team is one of the best feelings and that isn’t happening enough under Amorim.
Amorim needs to develop youth
Amorim provided many opportunities for young players at Sporting and that was something that excited a lot of United fans when he joined the club, but he needs to trust in the youth more often at Old Trafford.
The fact that he decided to bring on Patrick Dorgu and Joshua Zirkzee late on at Wolves, rather than giving Shea Lacey his debut, was confusing.
He has praised Lacey in press conferences and hinted that he will be ready to help contribute when the likes of Mbeumo and Amad leave for AFCON later this month, but his actions suggest otherwise.
Similarly, he has explained why he thinks Mainoo is a top talent but has yet to start him in a Premier League game this season.
There is pressure to deliver results and performances but United fans reminded Amorim on Monday night that there is also a pressure to develop and bring through youth players, as has always been the case at the club.
