Manchester United supporters believe that Ruben Amorim must test Kobbie Mainoo in a new position after a “special” moment against Fulham.

The clash between Manchester United and Fulham was far from entertaining, ranking among the dullest fixtures of the Premier League season.

Despite the lacklustre display, Ruben Amorim and his team would have been relieved to have secured all three points on the night.

In a match devoid of quality, United broke the deadlock with a deflected strike from Lisandro Martínez, which looped over the Fulham goalkeeper to find the back of the net.

Toby Collyer once again stood out, making a vital goal-line clearance after United came dangerously close to conceding another set-piece goal.

United were also unfortunate to not score a second goal in the latter stages of the game after Amad’s goal was ruled out by VAR for offside.

United fans demanding Mainoo position change

Kobbie Mainoo was introduced to the game as a late substitute and came on in his usual position in the midfield pivot.

However, it was a “special” moment in the final third before Amad’s disallowed goal which stood out for supporters, as the 19-year-old linked up with the Ivorian to brilliant effect.

The pair linked up, with Mainoo’s smart flick back to his 22-year-old teammate setting up what they thought was a second goal.

Immediately afterwards, United fans were all saying the same thing about Mainoo; that he should be tested in one of the no.10 roles in Amorim’s system.

One supporter wrote: “Mainoo in the 10 position looks kinda good. I want to see more of that.”

“How much more natural does Mainoo look in that advanced left 10 area?” another posted.

A third added: “Despite it being offside, that’s why I think Mainoo should be trialled in the ten roles. Link up play is top tier.”

Mainoo position change could work

Mainoo’s performances in the pivot in Amorim’s new system have been a little inconsistent and considering the lack of quality from United in the final third, this change could make sense.

You can look back at Mainoo’s best moments at United so far and they’ve all been in that advanced area on the left side. His goals against Wolves and Liverpool stand out in particular.

United also have players in the final third, such as Joshua Zirkzee and Amad, who thrive with short link-up play like for the disallowed goal at Craven Cottage. Mainoo can facilitate that.

It is probably not a long-term position for the teenager, who has the attributes to excel as a central midfielder. But the Reds are really lacking something in that position.

With a wingback who will provide a threat out wide – Patrick Dorgu is still being targeted by United –Mainoo could be the solution for United in that inside position.

Bruno Fernandes has looked good in the deeper role when he has played there, with more opportunities to get on the ball and make things happen.

It would be interesting to see this dynamic in the coming weeks, and fans are certainly keen for it to happen.
