Manchester United have been dealt a transfer blow as one of Rúben Amorim’s targets could be remaining at his current club this summer.
Manchester United are reportedly targeting a new goalkeeper this summer as Rúben Amorim continues to rebuild his squad ahead of his first full season in charge.
Despite a good working relationship between Amorim and André Onana, the 29-year-old’s long-term future at Old Trafford remains unclear.
Onana has shown glimpses of the form that secured his move from Inter Milan, but inconsistency has cast doubt over his position in the side.
After investing £127.5 million in Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo, Amorim is now expected to shift focus towards strengthening both the attack and goalkeeping departments.
With Onana ruled out of pre-season and potentially the start of the Premier League campaign due to a hamstring injury, and Altay Bayindir likely to leave, United are in urgent need of a new goalkeeper.
United dealt Donnarumma transfer blow
With United hunting for a new goalkeeper, multiple names have been linked with the Old Trafford club ahead of the start of the Premier League season.
One such name is Paris Saint-Germain’s Gianluigi Donnarumma, with United on alert after the Ligue 1 side reportedly transfer-listed the “world-class” player due to their inability to agree on fresh contract terms.
Furthermore, with PSG closing in on the signing of Lille goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier, it was thought that this would signal the end of Donnarumma’s time in Paris.
However, according to RMC Sport’s Fabrice Hawkins, it is not totally out of the realm of possibility that both Donnarumma and Chevalier compete for the position next season.
Despite retaining interest from United, Manchester City, Galatasaray, and Saudi Pro League sides, Donnarumma may yet stay at the Parc des Princes, with a decision to keep the player yet to be ruled out internally at the club.
United signing Lammens would be smarter
While Donnarumma is undoubtedly a talented goalkeeper, and at 26, fits the mould that United has been recruiting for, with players who have experience but still possess room to grow, there is a second, more plausible route the club can take.

It has been widely reported that the chances of Onana leaving Old Trafford this summer are slim due to his positive working relationship with Amorim. Therefore, it may make more sense for United to sign a younger goalkeeper who can compete with and push the Cameroon international next summer.
United have been closely linked to 23-year-old Senne Lemmens, who is reportedly keen to make the switch from Royal Antwerp to Old Trafford this summer, and would cost around £17 million – around half of the Italian international’s PSG price tag.
With United looking to save where they can in the market, Lammens may be the much safer option. The Belgian will have time to develop at United while he gets accustomed to English football.
