Manchester United believe that an underperforming £130 million due will ‘thrive’ under Ruben Amorim’s changed system at Old Trafford.

Ruben Amorim joined Manchester United last week as the new head coach and was welcomed to Carrington by the club’s hierarchy.

Dan Ashworth, Jason Wilcox and Omar Berrada were in attendance to meet the man tasked with improving the club’s current situation on the pitch.

According to the Telegraph, the United board are aiming to operate with a lower transfer budget under Amorim as they hope the new head coach can get much more out of the existing squad.

Rasmus Højlund and Mason Mount are among the players United believe can flourish under the guidance of Amorim, the report claims.

Those two players joined the club in the summer of 2023 for around £130 million combined and neither have hit the heights expected of them when they joined the club.

Yet, Mount’s best form in his career came under Thomas Tuchel in a similar setup to the one which Amorim is planning to implement.

Meanwhile, Højlund has consistently shown glimpses of his class and potential since his 2023 Old Trafford move, but there is a lot more untapped potential for the striker.

The club is optimistic that several squad members possess untapped potential that can be realised through improved coaching, tailored support and a system that maximises their strengths.

It was also noted that there is hope that Amorim’s arrival could reinvigorate the more experienced players in the squad and offer them a fresh start in redefined roles within the team.

Recent reports have claimed that Amorim is looking to utilise Marcus Rashford as a centre-forward after his recent struggles on the wing.

This would not be the same role that he would have played under Ten Hag when operating centrally, however, with Amorim’s system more tailored to the no.9 making runs in behind the defence – seemingly suiting Rashford’s style of play.

We have already seen how much improvement someone like Casemiro has shown with a more defined role and extra support in the midfield under interim Ruud van Nistelrooy.

The former United striker utilised Manuel Ugarte alongside the Brazilian in the midfield which helped negate the problems found so often in the midfield areas under Ten Hag.

Amorim’s adjusted system, with three centre-backs, is likely to further help those starting in the engine room, whether that be Casemiro, Ugarte or Kobbie Mainoo.
