Manchester United have received a request from Argentina to release Alejandro Garnacho to take part in the upcoming summer Olympics.

Garnacho, 19, had an extremely successful campaign last term with United, where he made 50 appearances and had 15 goal contributions.

The teenager scored the opener at Wembley last weekend as Erik ten Hag’s side beat Manchester City 2-1 and won the FA Cup for the 13th time.

Now, ahead of the summer, Argentina have asked United to release Garnacho for this summer’s 2024 Olympic Games in Paris

According to TNT Sports Argentina, Javier Mascherano wants to add Garnacho to his squad for the football event at the Games.

The tournament will run from July 26 to August 11, a crucial period leading up to the upcoming Premier League season.

Garnacho would miss some key pre-season preparation while also potentially being unavailable for the Community Shield clash against Manchester City if he reaches the latter stages of the competition.

Should Argentina reach the final, it would be less than a week between then and the opening Premier League game on August 17.

United’s latest appointment

Arsenal physio Jordan Reece is set to leave the club and join Manchester United, with a start date yet to be confirmed, according to The Athletic.

Reece will be joining former Arsenal head of medical services Gary O’Driscoll at Old Trafford. O’Driscoll, who joined United last summer, was brought in to spearhead changes and modernise the club’s medical department.

Reece will take on the role of United’s head physio, effectively succeeding Robin Sadler, who departed United in January.

The report added that the appointment is seen not as a response to United’s injury challenges last season but as a testament to the critical importance of having a robust medical team.
