Manchester Derby referee confirmed as Man Utd appointed 126-card official (Premier League)

The referee overseeing Sunday’s Manchester derby has been confirmed as Manchester United have been appointed a Premier League official who has dealt out 126 cards this campaign.

Following the March international break, Manchester United returned to action earlier this week, and Rúben Amorim is now turning his focus to a massive showdown with Manchester City at Old Trafford.

Tuesday night saw United fall to a 1-0 defeat away at Nottingham Forest. Despite the result and continued issues with finishing, there were signs of progress, particularly in how Amorim’s side handled the ball and controlled possession.

The Portuguese manager will be hoping for a sharper display in front of goal when Pep Guardiola’s City visit on Sunday for what promises to be a fiery Manchester Derby.

With Europa League fixtures also on the calendar, Amorim will have one eye on next Thursday’s trip to France, where United are set to face Olympique Lyonnais.

Confirmed officials

John Brooks (pictured below) will be the referee on Sunday afternoon in Manchester. Brooks has officiated 14 Premier League fixtures this season, three in the Europa League, and eight others in domestic competitions, as well as one Nations League tie.

Brooks has met United four times this season. Three came in the Premier League, the first of which was as 4-0 win over Everton. He also officiated United’s 3-1 win over Southampton earlier this year and the 2-0 loss against Crystal Palace.

He also oversaw United’s 4-3 loss against Tottenham Hotspur in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals.

So far this season, Brooks has issued 71 yellow cards in the Premier League and 126 across all competitions. He has issued no red cards this season but has awarded eight penalties this season, three coming in the Premier League.

During the game, Simon Bennett and Dan Robathan will serve as Brooks’ assistant referees. Tony Harrington will be the fourth official on Sunday afternoon, separating Amorim and Pep Guardiola.

Paul Tierney has been appointed as the Video Assistant Referee. Tim Wood will act as assistant VAR.
