One manager has been completely ruled out of the race for the Manchester United job if Ruben Amorim is sacked in the coming weeks.
Manchester United’s season has begun in disastrous fashion, with just two wins from seven games and an early exit from the Carabao Cup.
After last year’s misery; a 15th-place finish and defeat in the Europa League final; Ruben Amorim was desperate for a positive start, but his side has failed to deliver.
The club spent more than £180 million on a new-look frontline over the summer, yet wastefulness in front of goal remains a major concern.
United will be looking to turn things around when they welcome Sunderland to Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon but some reports have claimed a defeat could lead to Amorim losing his job.
Manager completely ruled out for United job if Amorim is sacked
If the Reds decide to part ways with Amorim, they will need to decide whether to chase a permanent option immediately or look to appoint an interim boss.
Whatever they pick, United will have plenty of coaches willing to make the move and many have already been linked with the move, including ex-England boss Gareth Southgate.
Southgate, who has been described as the ‘perfect’ Amorim replacement, has a positive relationship with Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS but it has been reported by David Ornstein that the 55-year-old will not be taking over at Old Trafford.
The journalist said to NBC Sports Soccer: “I am assured that Gareth Southgate is not in line for the Man United job should it become available.”
Southgate would have been an unpopular choice among fans. He has not managed a club team since he relegated Middlesbrough to the Championship in 2009.
Cultural building relies on results
Southgate never felt like a genuine candidate for the United job, even when he was linked as a possible successor to Erik ten Hag last year.
Some argued he could bring positivity behind the scenes and establish a stronger culture at the club, but that was exactly what Amorim seemed to be building over the summer.
Early setbacks this season have quickly undone that progress, underlining the reality that results will always take precedence. Culture and identity matter, but they can only truly grow alongside victories.
United may be laying the foundations through structural and leadership changes, yet those efforts will only properly filter through the squad once consistent results on the pitch follow.
