It has been a long summer for Christian Eriksen, who has failed to find a new club after leaving Manchester United as a free agent
Christian Eriksen’s three year spell at Manchester United came to a close at the end of last season, following the end of his contract.
The experienced midfielder left the club having won both the FA Cup and Carabao Cup under former United boss Erik ten Hag.
Rumours about a move for the Dane have died down as of late, with newly promoted Championship side Wrexham approaching to sign Eriksen at the start of the window, but nothing came to fruition.
Eriksen remains without a club, and ahead of the World Cup in 2026, concerns will be growing about his future in the Danish national team.
Denmark coach speaks on Eriksen situation
Eriksen made 35 appearances for United last season, but despite having a full summer to find a new club, he remains a free agent.
Speaking to Ekstrabladet, Denmark’s head coach, Brian Riemer spoke on Eriksen’s position in the Danish national team ahead of the World Cup next year.
On Eriksen, he said: “It is an unfortunate situation that Christian has ended up in.
“But it is clear that it is no secret that the fact that he has not played and has missed the start, and is now without a club less than two weeks before the meeting (next national team gathering), is a big challenge.
“I would be a complete idiot if I said it wasn’t a problem. Of course it’s a big challenge on all fronts.”
United players struggling to find new clubs
With the international break happening in the first week of September, there is serious doubt that Eriksen, who has been a mainstay in the Denmark team for the majority of his career, will feature.
Eriksen joins Victor Lindelöf in struggling to find a new club this summer after his contract also expired at the end of last season having fallen down the pecking order at the club, and despite being linked with a return to former club Benfica, nothing came from it.
It’s not just the former players who are currently struggling to find new clubs however. Nicknamed the ‘bomb squad’, Alejandro Garnacho, Jadon Sancho, Antony and Tyrell Malacia have all been deemed surplus to requirements at United, but none of the four have found moves away with just over one week left of the transfer window.
Despite clubs being interested in moves for all four players, nothing has materialised so far, as they are proving to be too difficult to make a deal for owing to their high wages and demands.
