Man Utd’s referee vs Wolves confirmed as the Premier League select official who made “baffling” Marcus Rashford error

The Premier League have confirmed a match official for Manchester United’s tie against Wolverhampton Wanderers who made a “baffling” decision in one of the club’s previous meetings.

Manchester United are back in Premier League action on Sunday afternoon, as they take on Wolverhampton Wanderers at Old Trafford.

Rúben Amorim’s last match saw his team complete an incredible comeback against Olympique Lyonnais at Old Trafford, winning 7-6 on aggregate to secure a place in the Europa League semi-finals, where they’ll face Athletic Bilbao.

Amorim will also be aiming to get revenge on Vitor Pereira’s Wolves after a 2-0 defeat in December, with goals from Matheus Cunha and Hwang Hee-Chan leading to a disappointing result for United.

The 40-year-old manager will hope his players can carry the momentum from their thrilling victory over Lyon into their return to domestic action.

Confirmed officials

Rob Jones (pictured below) will be the referee on Sunday afternoon in Manchester. Jones has officiated 19 Premier League fixtures this season, four in European competition, and five others in domestic competitions, including three in the Championship.

Jones has met United three times this season, with each of these three coming in the Premier League. He first was during United’s opening day of the season, in a 1-0 win over Fulham in August. Then, Jones officiated the 0-0 draw with Aston Villa two months later.

Finally, he then officiated a 1-1 draw away from home against Chelsea in November, where Bruno Fernandes scored and Jones handed out eight yellow cards, and 21 across the three games.

During the Villa fixture, Jones did not send off Marcus Rashford for two yellow cards after he tripped Leon Bailey, which former Premier League official Keith Hackett branded a “baffling” decision.

So far this season, Jones has issued 82 yellow cards in the Premier League and 125 across all competitions. He has issued six red cards this season and has awarded seven penalties, four coming in the Premier League.

During the game, Ian Hussin and Neil Davies will serve as Jones’ assistant referees. Darren Bond will be the fourth official on Sunday afternoon, separating Amorim and Pereira.

Matt Donohue has been appointed as the Video Assistant Referee. Nick Greenhalgh will act as assistant VAR.
