Manchester United have been told they have a massive advantage across the next six games after a 2-2 Premier League draw with Tottenham Hotspur.
Manchester United battled to a 2–2 draw with Tottenham Hotspur in an entertaining Premier League encounter on Saturday afternoon.
The opening exchanges were evenly matched, with United seeing more of the ball but struggling to create clear chances. Bryan Mbeumo eventually put Rúben Amorim’s side ahead, heading in from close range after an excellent delivery from Amad.
United went into the interval with a deserved lead, but Spurs responded strongly after the restart. Senne Lammens produced several key saves to keep them at bay, while Brennan Johnson had a goal ruled out for offside midway through the half.
Both Amorim and Thomas Frank made attacking substitutions as the game opened up, and Mathys Tel struck late on to bring Tottenham level.
Just when the hosts thought they had won it through Richarlison in added time, Matthijs de Ligt powered home a dramatic header to earn United a hard-fought point in North London.
United’s next six games are a massive advantage
While the Premier League is set to pause for two weeks due to international fixtures, upon returning, the club has a great run of fixtures. Amorim’s next six ties will be Everton (H), Crystal Palace (A), West Ham (H), Wolverhampton Wanderers (A), Bournemouth (H), and Aston Villa (A).
“There’s been a hell of a lot more positives out of the next six games for Manchester United than there were in the previous six games,” former Premier League striker Peter Crouch told TNT Sports after the draw.
“If you look at those there, fixtures, you know, you’d think they’d get a lot of points out of that, certainly the way they’re playing. I think there’s more positivity coming out of the Manchester United camp today than maybe the Spurs camp.”
Continuing, former United midfielder Owen Hargreaves agreed, explaining that United only having one game a week and a favourable set of fixtures is a “massive advantage” for Amorim. “It is a massive advantage.
“Pretty much, you know, you think about all the other teams and they even, you know, Spurs and Chelsea, everybody’s got European football, you know, Amrum’s got time on the training pitch, he’s a great coach, we know that from his time in Sporting.
“That season was tricky trying to navigate all the fixtures, I think, if you look at who they’re going to play in the next five, six games, and the way they’ve been playing, you know, I’m beating him five, and the squad that he has, and it’s settled. Mbeumo has been terrific.”
United’s major problem will be AFCON
United have the chance to continue putting together a seriously good run of form once football returns, but they are set to lose Mbeumo, Amad, and Noussair Mazraoui to the African Cup of Nations in mid-December.
When reminded of this, Hargreaves admitted that this will be a tricky thing to navigate once the time comes.
“I mean, that’s going to be tricky, but again, hopefully without so many games, they can keep the squad healthy and rotate players. Šeško is an interesting one — they’ll need him, but we’ll have to see what happens with that injury.
“I think the squad’s good enough, and without European football — I know it’s a miss for the club — but it could actually help them get back into the top four. Let’s not forget, it’s probably top five this season, and if they get back into the Champions League places, then that’s been a good season.”
