Manchester United dealt possible injury blow with early substitute spotted limping after Wolves loss
Manchester United have suffered a potential injury blow after an issue was spotted with Kobbie Mainoo following a Premier League loss against Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Wolves defeated Manchester United 2-0 in a Boxing Day Premier League match, marking United’s third straight defeat.
While United had some early chances through creativity from Noussair Mazraoui and Amad Diallo, Wolves were the stronger side in the first half, which ended goalless.
The game turned in the second half when Bruno Fernandes was sent off. Soon after, Cunha scored directly from a corner to put Wolves ahead. United made substitutions in an attempt to equalise, but Wolves held firm.
A late penalty shout for United was turned down by VAR, and Hwang sealed the win for Wolves with a late goal.
United suffer potential Mainoo injury blow
Kobbie Mainoo was not one of United’s best performers on the evening, and was taken off after 63 minutes and replaced with christian Eriksen.
He was one of three changes at that moment, with his midfield partner Manuel Ugarte and centre-back Leny Yoro being swapped out for Casemiro and Antony.
However, although many assumed that his change was down to his poor display and a reaction from Amorim to Fernandes’ red card, he has been spotted limping after the game.
Mainoo returned after an eight-week injury in the middle of last month, and has played 364 minutes across six appearances since then.
It is expected that Amorim will clarify if there is an issue surrounding Mainoo within the next few days because United welcome Newcastle United to Old Trafford on Monday evening.
What Amorim thought about United’s display vs Wolves
Following the game, Amorim was asked by the BBC for his thoughts on the tie, to which he said he thought the red card was the definitive turning point for the team.
“It was in two parts,” he said. Different because we played 45 minutes with one man and worse off for us. They suffered with a lot of chances.
“Even with 10 men, we were near their goal during their half. Again, set-pieces change the game a little bit to make it harder. In the first half, I think we controlled it. Sometimes, we controlled but Wolves made some transitions but we were in control of the game.
“We had a little bit of a lack of aggression in the last third but we were controlling the game. Then, we have the second half to do something more to change some things and then, the first player sent off was really hard for us.”
