INEOS are set to save themselves a significant chunk of funds as Manchester United are about to offer Willy Kambwala a new contract, according to reports.

Willy Kambwala has burst onto the scene at Manchester United following the brilliant rises of Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho. The 19-year-old centre-back earned rightful praise following a fantastic first senior start at Old Trafford against Liverpool.

Kambwala, who joined the club in 2021, has been used by Erik ten Hag to cover for his horrific injury crisis at the club in defence, where four of his five first-choice centre-backs are unavailable for selection.

Kambwala has thrived in the role so far and was particularly impressive against Darwin Nunez on the weekend, stopping the striker from having much of a sniff at André Onana’s goal.

Kambwala’s new contract

In light of Kambwala’s burgeoning potential, Manchester United is taking proactive steps to secure the defender’s future at the club, according to HITC.

Reports indicate that United’s coaches have made it known to the Old Trafford hierarchy that a new contract for the Frenchman should be a priority.

Kambwala is said to be ‘very happy’ at the club and is delighted at his full integration into the first-team squad, as he has been for most of this season. His current deal expires in 2025, and the club are ready to offer him a new long-term deal.

A new contract for Kambwala would help save INEOS millions in the short term, as it would mean they do not have to buy more than one replacement defender should multiple centre-backs leave this term.

Learning from mistakes

The club are looking to avoid the error they have recently made with his fellow academy graduate and forward Omari Forson, who also made his debut earlier this season.

Forson is set to put pen to paper on a new contract with the teenager’s current deal expiring in the summer – and there are doubts about if this will happen.

Forson has not quite made the same impact that Kambwala has thus far on the team, as the attacking department of United has multiple players ahead of him.

United are still looking for Forson to sign a new deal, but we will have to wait and see if this deal materialises or if he moves on this summer.
