“Cannot continue…” Manchester United star fired stark international warning after latest draw
Manchester United’s new star Matthijs de Ligt has been sent an international warning following a recent draw against Germany.
Manchester United‘s 2024 transfer window was exceptionally busy, leading to significant changes in the Old Trafford squad.
Under Erik ten Hag‘s management, the club strengthened its roster by signing five first-team players: Joshua Zirkzee, Leny Yoro, Matthijs de Ligt, Noussair Mazraoui, and Manuel Ugartee—all acquired during the summer window.
Meanwhile, the team parted ways with several high-profile players, including Scott McTominay, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Jadon Sancho, and Mason Greenwood, generating over £120 million in sales throughout the summer months.
With the transfer window over, many United fans watched the international breaks to get better views of the new signings, although this did not go to plan with Matthijs de Ligt.
After falling to mistakes against Bosnia and Herzegovina on Saturday, the 25-year-old was given another chance by manager Ronald Koeman but was substituted at half-time against Germany after making two further mistakes that led to goals.
Dutch media site Football-Oranje.com rated De Ligt’s performance during the 2-2 draw 5/10 and demanded that he stop making errors to continue with the Netherlands.
“Was given another chance but again made an error that led to a goal before being substituted early in the second half,” they said. “He cannot continue making errors like this.”
Explaining his decision to take De Ligt off at half-time, Netherlands boss Koeman claimed it was to protect the centre-back. “Of course, I would rather have kept [Matthijs de Ligt] on the pitch,” he told NOS.
“It just looks like he is now in a period where all his mistakes are being punished. I gave him a new chance today but eventually, I protected him by taking him off.”
