Man Utd warned about Premier League £100m summer signing who’s ‘not quite there’, he’s their third choice

A Manchester United legend has spoken about his doubts over a potential summer signing for the Red Devils, with the belief that he is ‘not quite there’.

Manchester United have looked an entirely different team to their disappointing performances last season, with Ruben Amorim’s side currently sat one point away from the top 4 in the Premier League.

The Red’s most recent fixture saw them face Tottenham Hotspur in a tight 2-2 draw away from home thanks to a late Matthijs De Ligt header, yet fans have began to question where United will look to strengthen next.

The summer saw United invest heavily in their attacking line with the signings of Benjamin Sesko, Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha. However, there is still doubt over the quality and reliability of United’s midfield looking ahead to next season, which may consist of European football as well.

United have identified many potential signings to slot into their system, but one United legend has shared his honest thoughts of one of the hottest prospects on Amorim’s radar.

Yorke has doubts over the signing of Wharton

Ex-United star, Dwight Yorke has shared his concerns over the potential signing of Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton, with the midfielder catching the eye of many top clubs.

With United’s midfield looking vulnerable at times this season, there is definite concern for the future. Casemiro looks to be nearing the end of his contract, Kobbie Mainoo has struggled for game time under Amorim and is seeking a potential exit, and Manuel Ugarte has had an underwhelming start to his career as a Red.

United need a replacement who can retain possession and carry the ball from defence to attack, evading pressure and showing the calmness and composure to back it up.

Wharton would certainly come with a heavy price tag of up to £100 million, with the 21-year-old monitored by many top clubs, having featured 15 times for Palace this season in a similar 3-4-3 formation.

At the same time, reports suggest that United are most keen on Brighton’s Carlos Baleba and Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson, with Wharton third on their midfield transfer list, at best.

Yorke thinks Wharton is not ready for United

Yorke told Snabbare, via Football365, “I’m not sure Adam Wharton is the answer. He’s still not quite there or me yet, and that’s an area of concern we have to look to improve.”

He also stated, “Casemiro has been hit and miss at times, and it’s a key part of your team. You listen to all the great managers, that central area of your midfield is always so important”

“Who I would like to see in that position more? I can’t think, honestly, because there’s too much hype around some of these players,” Yorke continued.

“Bring back Michael Carrick, maybe? There we go. He’d have done a job in this team.”

Wharton could bring composure and elite distribution to United’s midfield, but Yorke clearly has his doubts with the concern that fans and the media are getting too carried away with the excitement of United potentially spending big on the Englishman.
