Manchester United star will become “best in the world” under Rúben Amorim, says Edwin van der Sar
Edwin van der Sar has tipped one of Manchester United’s current stars to become one of the best in the world in his position under Rúben Amorim.
After arriving at Carrington on Monday morning, Rúben Amorim officially began his role as Manchester United’s new head coach this week. He takes charge following the club’s decision to part ways with Erik ten Hag at the end of last month.
The 39-year-old made an immediate impact, with Ruud van Nistelrooy and three other members of the coaching staff being dismissed as soon as he touched down in Manchester.

Amorim will spend the next two weeks assessing his new squad to decide on his preferred lineup. His first match in charge will be an away fixture against Ipswich Town in the Premier League.
He has already hinted at implementing his preferred 3-4-2-1 system from day one, leading to speculation about which players will fit into his tactical setup.
Onana tipped for stardom
With Amorim set to remain as United’s head coach for the coming years, former Old Trafford goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar has tipped André Onana as a player who could develop into one of the best in the world during that time.
“I trained a few times with him and I saw the talent, the strength, the reaction saves,” Van der Sar said of Onana, speaking on Rio Ferdinand’s YouTube channel.
He needed experience and needed to make mistakes, and of course, he made a few at Ajax and also made a few at United, but I think that develops you as a person and as a goalkeeper.
“He’s a very strong character, and I think that will help him become one of the very best goalkeepers in the coming years.”
Onana is a United leader
André Onana’s time at United has proven more than anything that he is a strong leader Amorim will depend on during their respective times at the club.
After a poor start to the 2023/24 campaign, where the Cameroon international made multiple horrid mistakes, particularly in the Champions League, he returned to form at the turn of the year and has been one of the side’s most important players.
More than this, the £43 million signing has been a consistent wall in front of goal.
Although the club have failed dismally across the last few months, leading to Ten Hag’s dismissal, Onana leads the 2024/25 race for the Premier League’s Golden Glove award.
He is commanding, talented, and of strong character—traits Amorim will greatly appreciate once United’s era under the Portuguese boss gets underway.
