Manchester United could benefit from a “big call” that Tottenham star Heung-Min Son has been told he must make in the coming months.

Manchester United’s financial approach is taking a sharp turn under Rúben Amorim, who is set to operate with a significantly reduced budget compared to the lavish spending under Erik ten Hag.

During Ten Hag’s tenure, the club invested over £600 million across five transfer windows, though many argue the returns have been underwhelming for such a massive outlay.

Amorim has already highlighted the need for reinforcements, with a striker, a centre-back, a left-back, and potentially additional midfielders topping the list.

To facilitate these signings, United are reportedly preparing to sell some of their valuable assets to raise the necessary funds.

United-linked Son has a “big call” to make in the coming months

Tottenham forward Heung-Min Son has been a star in the Premier League ever since his 2015 arrival at the London club from Bayer Leverkusen for around £22 million.

Of the 429 appearances he’s made for Spurs, six of his 169 club goals have come against United across 19 appearances, also providing two assists against the club in that time.

However, with the player’s current £190,000-per-week contract up in the summer and having been linked with United in recent weeks, former Chelsea and Aston Villa striker Tony Cascarino has explained that Son has a “big call” to make regarding his future in the coming months.

“I don’t think Son will stay at Spurs. No, I don’t. I think it’s one of them that you’ve got to make a big call on as well,” Cascarino told talkSPORT. “He’s been brilliant for them over the years, but it’s time to move on in football sometimes.”

He added: “He will survive, or they would definitely keep him, if he had a second part of the season that was superb.

“If he has that season where it hasn’t really worked to now, and then he goes and gets 15 or 12 goals in the second part of the season, plays well, then Tottenham will probably use that option.

“But as it is today, I think it’s more likely that he could go.”

United could benefit from Son’s big call

United do not have a lot of money to spend in 2025, with Sir Jim Ratcliffe implementing sweeping cost-cutting measures to help correct a series of losses at the club across the last decade.

However, should either the 32-year-old or Tottenham choose not to renew his current contract, United may benefit from the Bosman ruling that would allow Son to move to United for free in the coming months.

Although the player is certainly creeping into his senior years as a player, the two-footed South Korean dynamo is a player who could fit into Amorim’s 3-4-3 system as a short-term option while the Portuguese manager builds his project at United.

United are expected to offload multiple high-profile players such as Marcus Rashford, Christian Eriksen, and Casemiro across 2025, which is expected to save United over £1 million a week in wages, and with Son not having a transfer fee, signing him on a two-year contract could do wonders for Amorim.

Son is known to play off the left-hand side and is comfortable playing wide as well as an inside forward, which is a perfect fit for the currently vacant left-attacking role.
